Well the rumoured information is obviously wrong, but at least the stressing of rotations and lack of midfield experience turned the media cycle in our favour.

That piece is a Tigers supporter telling us the tigers have more members.

Carlton's failure to read the play last Sunday came off the back of a month-long media blitz and 24 hours after their chief executive Steven Trigg had declared "the next three weeks will be crucial" in attracting new and disenfranchised former members to the club.

So the days that followed the Blues' 10-goal thrashing by their weakened but bitter rivals Essendon** cannot have been easy for Trigg. If the club chief had sensed some vulnerability going into the game then that worry would have intensified by Monday night after significantly fewer than 100 supporters signed up.

This one year after the newly installed Trigg regime had endured a catastrophic membership oversight during the 2015 pre-season that saw another crucial subscription window period closed, senior staff sacked and the CEO delivering a public apology.

The AFL (in part...along with the usual people we blame - Collins, Kernahan, the boot studder etc) created this mess by destroying the Carlton brand and funding at the same times millions into North, Port and other clubs. If the AFL is so concerned by Carlton's plight how about utilising some money from the future fund so that Carlton can put more funds into increasing its membership.

This bit from the article...you just have to laugh

"The dismal performance by the undermanned Blues raised eyebrows all the way to AFL head office"
Raising eyebrows doesn't really help when at the same time millions are being funnelled into North, Port, Brisbane etc.
What would I prefer? raised eyebrows or millions of dollars?

They have fed off the carcass of Carlton for 10 plus years and now wonder why the club gets pumped in a pre-season game against a z-grade Essendon* list.

Caro should check her facts.

Membership is up 5000 on last year same time

And look at the 100 point belting WCE copped to Adeaide in week 1 or Richmond to Freo or Hawthorn or Rich

But no, only Carlton are held to account for not fielding their best sides in a preseason comp

The two Tones made a good point that next season we make the PP nab game our last hit out before the season proper as we are more likely to field our strongest side.

You make some good points, however, no one can justify kicking just four goals in a game of football.. That is abysmal.

Also, we have not one single player in the top 50 players in the game.
Says a lot. GWS has quite a few.
I am guessing the AFL would be happy that GWS has quite a few in the top 50 though.
Another project team up and running. Just need more work to be put into North Melbourne now.

She is right to a certain extent it was an missed opportunity to give fans hope.
But it will all be forgotten if we win round 1

I'd have Cripps in front of a fair few on that list and I haven't even seen the top ten yet...

For a club that has been preaching all summer that we are now united, part of one team and all pulling in the same direction, it sure looks like the marketing/membership guys and the coaches might have been reading different internal memos. If the plan was to go into the game with an under strength side, blood a bunch of kids and cap rotations, almost guaranteeing a belting from the Z Grade Bummers then why market the game as a 'Road to Damascus' moment, the homecoming of the club back to our holy ground, the dawn of a new era and a marketing push to increase members. Surely an experimental game with a very weak side would have been better played at an obscure country ground in front of 500 die-hard fans. How many lapsed members were enticed out of hibernation back to the old ground to see the next generation of champions and favorite sons.....get belted by 10 goals from the old enemy!

She is in part right - cant continue to kick 4 goals a game and provide hope to fans - also whose heart didn't sink getting beaten by 10 goals by beleaguered bummers even in a scratch match with ordinary team

She is wrong also because need for team - best team to be fit for round one - supporters need hope early in season

The shit thing here is that despite repeated comments that the intention is to build up to round 1 and that we'll have a fairly senior look about us against Sydney, any positive results from that match will be a seen as reactionary by key senior writers, because clicks/sales.

We get criticised for taking the short-term option. We get criticised for taking the long-term option.

Basically, if there's nothing much else to write about, criticise Carlton.

Agreed RE: MlG Dukes, he hasn't had a pretty start. But lets put Sunday into perspective: Essendon******* had considerable (ex)AFL talent out there, we rested our entire AFL midfield, played most of our other senior players for a half only, blooded all our draftees and played mostly rookies and transfers, and had intentionally limited rotations.

Essendon******* should have won by more and it will be a completely different story when we play them during the season.

Perhaps in years past, we would have deviated from the plan and played a stronger side to try and notch up a win - in a meaningless match in February. Now, under Bolton, we're sticking to the program with a single minded focus on the bigger picture. In the face of all the hype and innuendo about our list vs theirs, etc. it takes guts to do this as a coach (and as the administration behind him) and I'm wrapt this is where we're at.

I agree that Sunday was not the be all and end all but you can't help but feel that it signifies exactly where we are at. We've gone from the fringes of the finals to the bottom in the blink of an eye and it's just bloody frustrating having to smile through another season of mediocrity.

Thats where i disagree with your appraisal. We have gone from fringes of finals (with no hope of a flag) to bottom of the ladder following a list rebuild and complete makeover, with hope for the future.

We went bottom before starting our list rebuild, as always we break new ground in list management mediocrity. The rebuild started two years too late (should have happened after that round 15 loss to Collingwood in 2013) and the pain continues ...

What the club is doing now it should have done when Pagan was sacked (2007).

It should have happened during the Pagan era, early draft sanctions notwithstanding.

Historically speaking, which I like to do:

....

this game represented a number of losses in a row, albeit only a month or so earlier we were sitting in 6th:
