I'm not sure that that is the best criteria. I mean isn't it different for all of the ruckman. The club are an idiot.

I agree with you in that that is a @#$%&! stupid thing to say - however there's a small amount of truth to it in that there's been a clear focus in generating comms that show the league + fans that Carlton are turning things around and becoming the professional outfit that we've been screaming for. It's a bit overkill on the clubs part, but I get what they're trying to do.

The communications strategy needs to have club representatives ask two simple questions:

Is this the best form of our argument?

Could we be more positive?

In this case, the answer is a resounding 'no', followed by 'yes'.

But you've made the assumption that there's a Communications strategy...

If the club contacted media and said "Hey look we have this new initiative called The Fat Club" then that is a bit daft I agree.
But I doubt we did that, right ?

Somewhere in the chain someone either called it a fat club, or didn't correct someone when they openly interpreted as such.

Dunno...but that's when the real boredom starts. I much prefer the off-season.

It's different for everyone. The older blokes will have different metabolism, will want to be a certain weight, will have to sacrifice carbs in order to maintain lean bodies. For the younger guys, they're trying to get bigger, eating more regular meals and more protein. I'm ok with a range...but I'd probably be wanting to keep that stuff internal.

You're correct. A number of the young players have been placed on weight gain programs. With that comes an element of fat.
The strategy now is to bring that fat level down for the commencement of the season.

"But former sports administrator Brian Waldron has slammed the Blues, suggesting it was socially irresponsible to name the group the “Fat Club”. “Surely they could call it something else,” Waldron told SEN.

“To have a football club talk about a fat club — you only need to walk around the streets of Melbourne to see how many people are overweight. Some of it unfortunately is by their own doing, some is hereditary, some people can’t help it."

Brian Waldron talking about social responsibility

Who really cares.
It is to highlight the player or players rocking up overweight to embarrass them so they dont do it next year. It is a football club ffs. Im surprised this stuff even gets any air time.

So does calling someone fat nowadays result in the same level of mental anguish as rooting a mates missus?

Does the article quote anyone from Carlton using the word "skinfolds" Jim?
Players are having their food intake controlled by the club and their weights are being managed closely but skin folds aren't the criteria at this stage of the pre-season.
The article has a negative slant but the truth is, the overwhelming majority of players have added muscle, improved their endurance and both strength and fitness are up. Hence many are recording PB's in most areas.
Its all positive as far as I can see.
