Bruce Doull and then daylight at HBF. Umpires used to save their legs when the ball was headed for a contest on Doull's flank. It was always coming back. Great great player.

When Doull was recently retired, I suggested to a mate of mine that He (Doull) should write a book. I had the inspiration for the concept after listening to commentators over the years and so came up with this:

Punched Away by Bruce Doull

There wouldn't be much in it from Bruce, except for two sentences:

"It's my shout"

"It's your shout"

He was apparently at the game on Saturday.

As someone who never saw Doull play - my understanding of him was as a key position defender, and figure with a few of some of the names mentioned here (Roos, Sexton), query what the criteria of half back flanker as opposed to a centre half back would be?

With Southby at full back and Swan McKay at centre half back Doull was free to roam across half back and up onto the wing. Definitely a flanker for the bulk of his career. Only really took on the KP job after Swan and Southby retired. Which means he may well have played 100 games as a KPP but 250 more as a flanker. He was a very good KPP but he was played there by necessity and we missed his creativity there I reckon.

I don't remember him being beaten as a flanker (he got done a couple of times in his last couple of years as an undersized KPP) and his ability to set up players further down the ground was sublime.

Just one Carlton player with that sort of skill level would take us a fair way back up the ladder.

Docherty goes alright, developing nicely

Nah!
"It's my mumble".
"It's your shout".

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts in this thread. As a young bloke, I started barracking for Carlton when we won the 1982 grand final. So I only saw Bruce play as a key position defender. It has been fascinating to read about his exploits as a HBF.

Kenny Hunter was magnificent but Doully was ... well Doull, those that saw enough of his career will understand the inability to find an adjective sufficient to convey how good he was. Peerless, unrivalled, without equal ... say it how you like there is no contest. It reminds me of Sinatra's comment on Bing Crosby - just put him up on a pedestal and let the rest of us fight it out for second best.

LOL. Doull is to Hunter as Hawthorn 2015 is to Carlton 2015.

And.... Hunter was a star.

Loved Kenny Hunter but Doull operated on a higher plane.

Motley could have easily picked up the baton from Bruce but we will unfortunately never know.

That was my 'supporter baton' at age 13.

Bruce Doull and daylight second!

I would however suggest that for a 3/4 year period in the 70's Jessa absolutely mastered the position,so much so that I think that he was a template for the modern day quarter- back defender. His marking ,disposal and anticipation was something to behold.

Having seen all but 2 games of his career, I would go so far as to suggest that he was a better defender than a forward and that is saying something.

Just on Johnnie James he actually was a CHF early in his career.Hard to believe of someone who was a "Collingwood 6 footer"
