Carlton failed to manage, maintain star players, Blues great Mark Maclure says

CARLTON premiership great Mark Maclure says the Blues would have made the eight this year with Eddie Betts, Jarrad Waite and Jeff Garlett running riot in the forward line.

Instead, Waite and Betts starred in weekend finals wins for Adelaide and North Melbourne, while another discarded Blue, midfielder Mitch Robinson, claimed the Brisbane Lions best and fairest in a four-way tie.

Former Blues Josh Kennedy (West Coast), Sam Jacobs (Adelaide), Jeremy Laidler (Sydney) and Shaun Grigg (Richmond) also featured in finals action.

Betts has kicked 63 goals this season and Waite 39.

Garlett, traded to Melbourne for picks 61 and 79 last year, booted 40 goals in his debut Demons season.

“Carlton could have made the eight this year if they had maintained and managed those players,” Maclure told the Herald Sun.

“The evidence is clear enough. They have ended up with no forward line whatsoever. Someone was in charge of the wheel, but they will never put their hand up.

“Seriously, it’s hurt the football club.

“You’ve got to score — the only pressure you can put on is when you put scoreboard pressure on.

“They had a dangerous forward line — Betts, Garlett, (Chris) Yarran, (Andrew) Walker and Waite. The forward line was there but someone had a different philosophy.

“It’s a disaster really.”

Hard to argue with that. He obviously reads TC.

Generally that's how it works when you finish stone motherless last.

We're not going to go anywhere if we keep trading our good players away. If ever there was a weekend that said that we messed it up with Kennedy, Betts and Waite it was this weekend. I don't care what reason you give for the trade. The point is that we should have had an environment where the players never wanted to leave. We should never have traded any of them. Quite simply you win games when you score more than the opposition. No wonder we are on the bottom if all of our best scorers are at other clubs.

We didnt trade Betts and Waite.
If anything it highlights how we got ripped off with the non Waite compo. Frawley pick 3, Waite a big fat zero.

We got Thomas for Betts instead because we didn't want to pay Eddie what he wanted and Waite was 31yr and we offered him only a 1 year deal why would we get compo for that?

Further compounded by the fact that the bloke we got to replace Waite (Jones) got a 3 year contract.

Thought this thread deserved something of a summary for the 2015 year on the Blueseum:

Happy to add / subtract to it. There were also some really cool (horrible) memes and other images for this - happy to add them for context.

It's going to be even tougher to beat the ex Blues next year as Henderson, Yarran, Menzel and Bell are added to Kennedy, Betts, Waite, Grigg, Laidler, Garlett, Robinson, Hampson and Jacobs. That's 13. Could Essendon* pick up Nick Holman and make it 14 ex players? That would be some sort of record surely.

We're better off without all of them, with the exception of Kennedy and Betts (who are the only two in that list that have the heart and the talent to slot into a premiership-capable team).

And which of their replacements that we've brought in via trade or free agency are ready to step into your "premiership-capable team":

Kennedy - Judd
Betts - Thomas
Henderson - Jaksch
Yarran - we have no-one with his skillset on the list, maybe Sumner if he's fit?
Menzel - Boekhorst or Jed Lamb
Bell - Kerridge
Waite - Liam Jones
Grigg - Nick Graham has shown a bit
Laidler - if Plowman isn't fit Simon White is guaranteed a place as a third tall, who's next in line, Dick???
Garlett - Armfield and Tutt will have to play as a small forward this year
Robinson - Whiley
Hampson - Andrew Phillips
Jacobs - Gorringe

Most of them had their deficiencies but for the most part, we've downgraded in almost every one of these positions over the last 3 years.

Thank goodness we've decided to go via the draft because our 'tried' player recruiting makes Nathan Buckley look like a genius. We need to find some gold out of the "the GWS 4" from this year, Jaksch, Boekhorst and/or Whiley or else we'll be confined to the bottom 4 for the next 5 years.

The only one I really miss for the excitement he provided was Eddie. By far my favourite player in the dark years.

If we can keep Gibbs Murphy Thomas Kruezer Docherty Jamison Walker and Touhy on the park and Bolton doesnt go all out defense we should be able to knock off the Ex Blues off this year.
Don't under estimate the negative impact that Malthouse had on this group

Heard from a father of a player this week that Bolts is giving them licence to take the game on, to be really positive going forward, no more kicking back trying to keep possession. The players really like it

It really does get difficult not thinking what could be with some of the players lost, in particular during the MM era. Watching Laidler for instance last night, let alone Waite, Betts, Garlett doing so well and now add Henderson ..... Oh dear.

Laidler wouldn't be a difference maker in our defence, nor would Garlett be a difference maker up forward.

Kennedy, Waite and Betts would be welcome additions, as would Henderson and Yarran if their hearts were in it.
