Thought he spoke well, well done to all involved in the hire.

If the word on Craig is right, I would welcome him also.

Channel 7 news mentioned the Craig rumour too.

Seven days after Essendon* parted with James Hird, an astonishing footballer who had never coached prior to his coronation, Carlton has hired a man who never played AFL but has coached extensively at lower levels and completed a 13-year elite apprenticeship.

Seven days after Essendon* paid out Hird the balance of his contract, Carlton has hired a coach without a contract.

The most important aspect for me is that BBs focus will be on teaching and developing players. The club has been awful for many years when it comes to player development.

Example, I asked Casboult the other day if he in all his years at CFC has had any set shot specialist training before Rocca arrived. Answer - No

Anyone know how this rolling contract works? So if he becomes successful, and some club comes at him with a lot of money, can he just pick up and leave?

Trigg mentioned "protections" for both club and BB. I'd guess these would involve mutual commitments to notice of termination. But just as the club's exposure to a payout to BB would be reduced, I can't imagine this agreement would lock BB in to the same extent a fixed term contract would.

Apparently there's been a long term desire to get Craig into the club. No need to guess who's driving the plan.

Mick goes into the Craig rumour here, as well as pumping up his ex-assistants.....

Sounds like a good appointment handled well. I particularly like that he's smart enough to know that he needs to be there for the entirety of the off season planning and decision making.

But can someone explain what 'being on staff' instead of a contract means in practice?

I get that 'presentationally', it means we're not putting any sort of artificial timing on how long this job is going to take. But in purely financial terms I assume his remuneration is higher to compensate for loss of financial certainty?

i.e We would have paid him $X per annum for three years, and instead we're paying him at least $X + $Y per annum instead? With Y being some function of X (approximately 1/4 at at guess, given coaches are generally sacked about half way through the last year of their contract anyway). So we're essentially paying his 'contract completion' performance bonus as he goes, and if necessary can sack him early enough to not take a loss on that.

I assume the normal coaching arrangement is that they're a contractor, whereas Bolton will be a permanent employee. 4 weeks notice for either party to terminate his employment.

Never thought of how it worked before.

Welcome aboard Bolts!

Figure out how to clone Cripps a few dozen times and you'll be our greatest coach of all time.

The best thing about him not being on a fixed term contract is that both Bolton and the club can avoid some of the media's usual scrutiny around renewal/sacking time.

This way when the club says the coach is the coach and that he has the backing of the board they're absolutely correct unless they've just sacked him.

There's none of the "why haven't the club renewed his contract?" crap.

There would be a decent notice period for both parties, so he'll get a payout of some kind when both parties part ways if Carlton end the contract.

The advantage as said above is to avoid speculation about contract extensions

Genuine excitement for the first time in ages. I'd like to think that Yazz can have a chat with him and maybe stay ?

He comes across as very focused in a relaxed way, and even like the "comfortable being uncomfortable" line

Feel a tad sorry for Barks, but he's just been too long in the losing culture to beat a current Hawks dude.

It's over to SOS to weave his magic
