Caro chimes in...

Caro wrote:
Hawthorn are expected to reach a compromise with Brendon Bolton over the coming days that should see the prospective Carlton coach not take over at the Blues at least until the end of the home-and-away season.

Bolton, 36, is believed to have won the senior coaching job at Carlton ahead of caretaker John Barker who has been asked to remain at the Blues as part of the new coaching team in an agreement reached with the club when he took over from the sacked Mick Malthouse.

The Blues' board is understood to have ratified the Bolton appointment late on Monday. The decision was virtually reached late last week although the former North Hobart captain-coach, who managed a 5-0 winning record when he stepped in for the ill Alastair Clarkson last year, had not been told over the weekend he had won the job.

Bolton was the preferred choice of Blues chief executive Steven Trigg after the Hawthorn assistant underwent a gruelling series of four interviews, including a psychological assessment followed by a lengthy interview.

His imminent appointment and departure from the Hawks has been complicated by the tragic death of Brett Ratten's son, Cooper, whose funeral was held on Monday.

Ratten, who delivered a eulogy for the 16-year-old Cooper, has been given indefinite leave of absence by the Hawks but could return next week to assist the club as they attempt to win their third successive premiership.

Interest now lies how the clubs handle the appointment and subsequent move. If it's announced during the season, does Bolton leave Hawthorn immediately (surely would have too) and does he join the current coaching panel in the background as an observer for last 2 games?

Who cares, not our problem. Bolton is coach end of story!!

So, about that Round 23 fuxture. That's gonna be a ball tearer.

Happy with Bolton, tough on Barker, but in my expert opinion we needed someone from outside the club.

I am happy that we have finally had a serious process and i really hope we have got it right. If it is Bolton then i hope he is terrific. My only concerns are that he doesn't project the authority that really great coaches have. Lyon and Clarkson can be ordinary blokes but they have a steely belief that suggests few players are going to ignore their authority.

It will be a real challenge for Bolton. When he is interviewed he always comes across like a wide eyed boy.

He will need huge amounts of resilience and authority with a bottom side, a long rebuild and an impatient supporter base. I really hope we have got it right.

I really hope we get it right just for the fact we've actually gone through a rigorous process and I want the new way to be solidified in the psyche of the decision makers now and in the future.

Comparatively no. People were a lot shorter in all those periods. Also most of them were nutters.

I think Barker needs to stay another year. If his personality works with Bolton, I'm tipping a culture change unprecedented at Carlton.

I would also look at Barker as the Northern Blues coach so he can continue coaching in his own right.
