Terrible
Ratts and his first wife were our neighbours in Kangaroo Ground. Knew the kids when they were little.
What a waste.

Been out today and only just heard about this.

Terrible news. Thoughts and best wishes to Brett and the Ratten family.

Absolutely devastating news. How do you stop kids doing this! Such a shame that a bad decision can be so final!

It appears that they made a series of dumb decisions.
He now pays for it with his life and the two friends have to live with this for the rest of their lives.
So senseless.

All passengers have to have the same laws apply to them as does apply to the driver. Drink/drug driving, speeding, driving while disqualified, driving a stolen vehicle, losing car through hoon legislation etc.

You get into a car with this moron, you face the same charges.

If the passengers have something to lose, they may think long and hard about getting into the car. How many 17 year olds want to lose their Ls or the possibility of Ps to joy-ride with a pissed mate?

You'd think losing their life would be a big enough deterrent, but it seems not.

They are just kids though. One tragic decision will ruin their lives.

No parent should ever have to bury their child.
Heartbreaking news.

Probably my fave player at Carlton with Dominator.
This is just awful.
There is no good haveing a go at the kid now. There is nothing to be gained.
Made a wrong choice but still shouldn't have to pay with his life.
Won't be the last unfortunately.

I hope the club do something for one of our best ever players and clubmen.
He isn't a Hawk, he's a Blue.

I saw a photo in the paper of Ratts with Cooper when he was about 2, both in Blues gear. It's just terribly sad

So sad and so needless.

1. Underaged driver
2. No licenced driver in car.
3. Fog
4. 3am
5. Speeding
6. Alcohol
7. Drugs
8. No seat-belt

How do you survive that? An accident was just waiting to happen.

Those with kids please make sure that they understand that we have rules in life to protect us and keep us safe. If we fail to adhere to those rules there could be deadly consequences.

My condolences to the Ratten family.

Carlton could have had a father-son here. We will find another player. Brett has lost his son forever.

I am fully in favour of a 0.00% alcohol driving limit. We need to separate alcohol and driving completely. Only then with a committed education program for all people in our society will we change people's driving behaviour and save lives.

Zero alcohol wouldn't have stopped these kids behaving insanely. They were under age, drunk, with drugs - laws meant noting to them.

Absolutely tragic. My daughter knew Cooper. He is the second kid she has met that has been killed like this.

Awful tragedy and unfortunately one that is played out every week of the year. Young men make foolish decisions and sadly that can lead to events that effect lots of lives forever. Feel very sorry for the Ratten family, few tragedies can be as profound as the loss of a child in a senseless accident.

My worst nightmare still, even though my eldest kids are in their 30s.

I can not imagine what the poor parents must be thinking.

Tragic.

Funeral today

Quote:
HUNDREDS of people are attending the funeral of Cooper Ratten in Lilydale this morning.

Cooper was killed in an horrific car accident in Yarra Glen on Sunday.

Poignant photos of the much-loved 16-year-old were on display as mourners filed in.

The attendees included Cooper’s sporting teammates and Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge.

The public funeral service was scheduled to begin at 11.15am in the Federation Chapel at Lilydale Memorial Park followed by burial in the Yellow Gum Gardens section of the cemetery.
