So everytime we have a bad loss this thread is going to be bumped?

Harden the flower up people! If we merge we are no longer Carlton, it's that simple.

Adelaide lost a game by 150 points in 2004, Essendon* by 130 odd in 2006, Port by about 170 against Hawthorn as recently as 2011.

I know we haven't been good for a while, but it's still less than 2 years since we won a final, and there are other clubs who haven't won one in over a decade.

We know we are in a tough spot, Friday night doesn't tell us much we didn't know before.

Why would anyone want to merge with our mess of a board/club?

Personally, I would see a joining of forces with another 'also run' Melbourne club a positive move. A big modern day smart move. Provided it was done smartly with an end goal to be a huge club like Hawthorn or Collingwood that plays at the MCG in weekly blockbusters. That is not going to happen with Carlton. A lot of old Carlton fans will drop off as they will see it as one of those merges that were put forward back in the nineties.
I would choose to see it as the only play left if we hope to follow a team that stands a fighting chance of being a Melbourne superclub that can compete with the likes of Hawthorn Collingwood Adelaide Westcoast and AFL (Sydney, GWS and in time GC). A progressive move that is a modern equivalent to clubs playing home games in Tassy or moving away from their traditional home grounds after almost 100years. A modern equivalent to trying to finish last so you get good players.
I think it is something that should be explored and seen as a positive.

I don't mind staying Carlton and be a team that makes up the numbers for the super clubs to be super either. I just wont expect us to be much more and i will be happy that I got to live through the glory years.

If we merge with another 'also run' club, won't the new club just be twice as shit as either of the old clubs?

Mike Sheahan is adamant that 18 clubs is too many and hence talent is being diluted etc.
He believes there should only be 12 teams - said tonight on 360 that 6 teams should be scrapped. He says 12 teams would ensure more watchable games and would meet the level of talent available and increase the quality of the AFL.

I don't know if I agree or not. But it got me thinking - if 6 teams were scrapped today, would we be one of them?
In the past you probably wouldn't dream of it, but I actually think we could be one of the teams.

afl wouldn't shut down one of their babies in gc.

bulldogs are more relevant than us these days.

once upon a time saying carlton would be even mentioned in such a conversation would be hysterical, now whilst it might not be 100%, it's definitely more viable

it was a real struggle to pick 6 and not include us.

I was just trying to keep the main heritage teams in and remove the 'small markets'

to remove 6 in all reality (which would never happen) both recent expansion teams would have to go.

yep won't happen.

but I think it would have the desired effect - but you can't just shut down clubs for aesthetics.

just the fact it's a difficult task to not include us illustrates exactly where this once great club is - a rabble in a deep hole I fear we will never dig ourselves out of.

I agree with Mike.
12 teams would be good.
Also 16?
Merge a few
Teams.
Bullies and cats
Melb and Carlton or carlton Saints(yuk!)
Norrth and..
Nah just burn Norf.;)

Need to keep 2 teams in each state for national game..
Definitely my pref would be us to be Tassie Blues.
Already mourned our club and ready for next stage.
Playing each team twice..every team with super talent sounds good!

I was a massive AFL and NRL supporter
The clubs I loved were the Western Suburbs Magpies and the Carlton Football Club
Western Suburbs then merged with the Balmain Tigers, and my passion for my NRL club has never been the same, including the time in 2005 when they won the comp
My passion for Carlton is as strong as ever
DO NOT THINK THE MERGE A GOOD IDEA IF YOU WANT YOUR PASSION FOR CARLTON TO REMAIN

This pearler of a thread again.

Carlton will not merge.
AFL needs a strong Carlton for both TV and game attendance.

Carlton, like Collingwood is a Melbourne- Aussie Rules institution.
Carlton has won the most VFA VFL AFL premierships.
At our peak in 1995 it was estimated Carlton had 1 million supporters.
Carlton was and is a team others like to hate.
They kick us when we are down, as they did in the 50's and 60's.
They know we will rise again...not if but when...as long as the AFL takes the boot off our throat.

We have failed to rebuild after the draft penalties.
We failed the Pagan Ratten and Malthouse eras.
15 wasted years, during a challenging period including change in priority pick rules, compromised drafts, FA and player movements and unfavourable umpiring to say the least.

We have copped our 100 point thrashing and it's blatantly obvious we need to rebuild this ship right this time. No room for mistakes.

Rebuild does not mean Merger.
Carlton merger will not happen.
The tables will turn....albeit slowly.

Ive been thinking about this so much lately.
I havent articulated well.Ive asked questions and received good answers.
They dont help my concerns though.
I find myself hoping for a major collapse of the AFL
So it can reappear again in a less corporatised manner..and boutique local stadia might flourish wirh smaller crowds less useless ossip and stats
Less of everything.
Less so called journos..less hangers on less commentary.
I wish we could get that withthout a collapse.. no sure how.

For our club. .I dont know who we are and what we stand for.
Are we going to be a Rossy Lyon style team or a glory days Cats style..a Hawks type?
It matters to me. Ive come to believe that the whole roos sydney style has ruined the game.
That and too many teams to support the talent.
Who we hire will flow on to the type of players we draft.
That is why its so important to know our preferred style of play.
After all...we hired MM and he had the worst game style imaginable.

Exactly.

Like my Fitzroy mates who pretend to barrack for Lions, but won't attend games let alone buy memberships...not even during their peak in the early 2000's.

I will remember the Blues and love them, perhaps remove a lot of the merchandise and coax the kids to strip down the posters in their room and steer them away from Aussie rules for the surf, snow and sails during winter... basically a healthier choice.

Of course people would drop off if say North and Carlton married and become the Northern Blues but give it 10 years and few oldies dropping off will be a whole lot better than the alternative.
Clubs are going to do it. Just you watch. The AFL will have no alternative. The Hawks or Pies might even gobble up a club just for the fun of it and it will be seen as ruthless and smart.
Before the shit goes down we could explore getting on the front foot. Think outside the square. Be the ones setting the pace. Get the best incentives from the struggling governing body. Own Melbourne's Northern Corridor. Blue skies ahead for The Blues. Every second Saturday at the g watching our 16 heroes (+4 Subs) take on the best from around Australia in free flowing, tough , entertaining football.

..............Or remain Carlton. Fill out the numbers for the AFL. Hope to get lucky with some father sons, maybe an afl gifted easy draw and perhaps get some finals like games against the dogs or Dees at Etihad to see if we can sneak into the 8.
