C'MON BLUEBAGGERS!....is an interesting one. Our best theory at this stage relates to an old laundry product used in all Australian households during and after WW2 (and internationally), called "Reckitts Blue" which came in a small white muslin bag. Reckitts Blue was put in the Copper or Washing Machine to whiten whites and brighten colours, and came in little blue bags.

I put "Bluebaggers" into Trove.
The Truth (Sydney) May 18 1930, has a report of the Rugby League match Balmain v Newtown.

"Wentworth Oval was packed with loud voiced and iron lunged enthusiasts yesterday when the Tigers put a stopper on the Bluebags, winning form after a ding-dong game."
Balmain 18 - Newtown 14

The Adelaide Journal in 1886 and 1891 mentions bluebaggers in two articles (soon to be released in full by Trove) but from the brief part that is on Trove it seems to related to politics.

"Bluebags" in Trove brings up plenty of references for the Newtown rugby league club.

Also in 1899 the Australasian (July 01 p22) in relation to Wesley College school football the term "Down with the blue-bags" has been used by some of the boys.

The Bluebag laundry product goes back to the 1870's and I remember my mum having them in the 1960's.

Trove also has the South Australian Register 29 May 1873 (p5) which has a comic piece on Melbourne,
"Mrs S. carried on the business of washing and ironing, combined with crimping, and clear starching - terms moderate, orders punctually attended to - at No.1201, Little Bluebag-street, Carlton."
