fundamentally i agree with carlton owning the culture and fashioning what they want the club to look like; then finding the coach that fits and can execute.
Geelong is a good example of a club that wanted to continue with a philosophy that was already established. ie the list management was not about to be totally over hauled with a new coach. Chris needed to fit in. He has. i am sure he exerts more influence now than in year 1 and is able to tweak day to day stuff without fundamentally changing their approach. even matty knights as their reserves coach fitted their philosophy.

everytime you bring in a coach who wants to change everything it sets you back. it is better to build a long term way of being as an organisation.

carlton i think has grasped what that finally equates to in the salary cap era. this will take time.

hence why i think a young coach who can stay the journey for 5 plus years is who we should be selecting and investing in. but more broadly the coaching group as a whole need to be carefully assembled to align with our philosophy

Remember Ratten's involvement in list management, recruitment, sports science, football management, development, etc. It's what was his and the clubs' ultimate failure to identify. His role was to coach the team and manage his assistants through delegation. I have it on good authority that it was Ratten's call that wanted Kane Lucas and overruled the recruiting departments call who committed to Talia before the draft that if he was available at our pick we would be selecting him.

I guess this is relevant in the context that the club has set the path around list management, recruitment, et al and clearly defined the coaches role. Absolutely, input into the list management/strategy, recruitment, sports science, etc will be part of the role, but not his ultimate call, if that makes sense?

According to David King this is John Barker's Grand Final, has to win this game against the Bulldogs if he is any chance to get the job.

Seriously,............

I kid you not, the year i moved to the UK (3 years ago now) I bet against everything he said. I reckon i made AUD$600+ for the season betting against the exact opposite of what he said.
I cashed out an the end of the season and took the missus to Paris!! Cheers Kingy!!!!

Haha. I remember chatting to him in a live blog on the Herald Sun and suggested I give him commission from my winnings.

Going by the look of him too, he's putting on at least 10kg a week. He'll be in Billy Brownless territory soon.

In Barrett's weekly sliding doors article he says Ken Sheldon is a Bruce Mathieson plant.

It is understood Dew has been one of the most impressive performers in the accreditation program, which saw all nine members come together in Melbourne earlier this month for a two-day workshop.

Regrettably, Adelaide now have to find a new coach too, surely Dew and Lloyd would be on their radars, too. Will it "flush us out" and bring forward our decision to appoint a new coach? Interesting times with this new sad dynamic in play.

Don't Adelaide need a coach now? Will that rule out Dew and Lloyd who are involved in premiership campaigns?

What i'm asking is will Sydney and /or Freo release an assistant coach in the next 2 weeks?
Will Adelaide be willing to wait till years end?

No. I wouldn't think so.

I also think, giving that I live in Adelaide and getting a sense of the devastation that people are feeling, a calming 'old boy' appointment could be on the agenda.

It's only early but it wouldn't surprise if someone the likes of Bickley stepped up (as an example) and was appointed.
