Following in the path of Essendon*, do you think Carlton should end its with William Hill and/or any betting agencies?

http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/2015- ... g-decision

Quote:
“This decision wasn’t made lightly, particularly with the revenue a wagering partner can deliver,” Essendon* Chief Executive Xavier Campbell said.

“We have a fantastic group of commercial partners and we will be directing our energy to nurturing these existing relationships, as well as establishing new partnerships with like-minded companies.”

Sports betting agencies spent around $50 million on TV, radio and print advertising in 2013 according to a Nielsen study.

“We certainly respect the right of betting agencies to advertise in sport,” Campbell said.

“But as an industry we need to proactively monitor the way this message is delivered particularly given many of our fans are children.

“In forming this decision we also took into consideration the feeling of our membership base who have expressed a sense of concern.”

Nanny state. It's a legal product. Where does this end ... no sponsorship from alcohol or fast food?

I'm a registered player with the Football Federation of Victoria and apparently I'm not allowed to bet $5 on an a-league game. The world has gone mad.

Well done Essendon*. You truly are a moral benchmark that all other ethical sports teams should aspire to.

Thank you for being so awesomely full of integrity.

"The Essendon* Football Club note the concerns in the community around sustainable living. With that in mind we are today announcing that we will be recycling all our used sharps and needles from our totally legal injection regime. This recycled material will be used in community projects and will produce enough recycled material for 83 park benches and 32 playgrounds. EFC* is committed to giving back to the community."

No.
Its a legal and legitimate business. Why can't they sponsor us? Because people have an 'addiction'

Look, everybody knows i love a punt. Love it. My idea of bliss is sitting in a nice Pub Tab with the Herald Sun Flemington form guide picking a few horses and having a pint,.......... OMG!!! (been a few years since I've done that though)

But, whilst i love to punt, i do it responsibly. It's a game - not a way of an income.
I give myself a budget (usually $50 a weekend) and if that goes, it's gone. If you win something - brilliant, buy yourself a pint!

But i do know people that are really quite silly with gambling. And they struggle with it because they don't understand what it is. They think they can win it all back. Just like Pokie machines.

Over here (in London) it's shocking, and i don't go into any of the betting agencies here because they are sad sad places, and it's the way they are run and the promotions that they do that make them this way.

So, back home, whilst i have no problem with betting agencies sponsoring clubs or broadcasters etc etc, I do think we need to stamp out the exotic betting promotions and these silly "Cash Back" and "Free Bet" offers that they create because it is not sending the right message and people, especially younger people just getting into gambling, think that a 'cash back' offer is a no lose situation. They don't see a risk because these betting agencies promote it that way.

So, whilst i have no problems with sponsorship, I have major problems with how they 'promote' themselves and this should really be regulated and monitored.

Our CUB sponsorship would have done as much damage.

Heck even our Malaysia sponsorship looks bad now.

If people want to give us money we should take it.

In a two horse race always back self-interest because at least you know it’s trying.

No such thing as pure money.

Suns for example sponsored by Hostplus who derive a shitload of their returns from tobacco, alcohol and weapon manufacturing.

Where do we draw the line? Should we refinance our loans because our banks finance dirty coal? Or turn away other sponsors because they profited from the mining boom?

Agree.

Let people do what they want. So many nanny state rules coming to fruition lately.

Gambling addiction is BS. Basically you are either greedy, stupid or weak willed. Calling it an addiction and blaming the agencies is a pathetic excuse to blame someone else for your own mistakes. Nobody cares to take responsibility for their own actions.
