First reaction is that it is a quality list. Really like Ange P. as a member.

My only (minor) criticism is that David Campbell is the only person on the panel without a Carlton connection and given his firm helped sign Trigg it's still not a stretch to say there's nobody on there who is totally independent from the club.

We need as many fresh eyes who won't give a toss about our history giving us an honest opinion.

Not bad. A guy who knows coaching, a v v v recent player, a recruiter (who can hopefully see through a slick powerpoint presentation) and Sheldon who has a bit of experience across playing, coaching, administration. And Trigg who will be invested in the outcome.
Would have liked a Robert Walls / Dunstall type to challenge the thinking but I guess Ange would be able to play that role.
The only problem with having Ange on the committee is that it makes it v unlikely he would be able to accept the role ;-).

Imagine our board trying to read jim's 2047 page summary of his recommendations.

I know Dunstall was credited with finding Clarkson, but I doubt he'd really want to or have time to do it.

Is it appropriate for someone from AFL House to be involved?

I'd have a 5 member panel. The names are just names, the point is more about their background.

Mark Evans - AFL involvement
Jude Bolton - recently retired player
Robert Walls - Former Club player and Coach (this could be any former AFL coach, someone like Rodney Eade)
Steven Trigg (Andrew McKay) - club representative
Independent Person - someone from business with a background in recruiting and managing staff, leadership etc.

I guess I'm happy enough with the panel. Got a coach in another sport rather than someone from the AFL.

Was thinking along the same lines, maybe a bit too much Carlton connected people. Wasn't sure what to make of the list but most on here seem pretty happy so I will take it as a positive.

Reckon Judd is ballsy enough to give honest feedback, especially now that he's retired.
Even when he was playing, he wasn't afraid to tell it as it is.

I don't think Carlton connections are particularly concerning for these guys. Trigg is invested in the outcome. Good. Judd and Ange are now supporters - can't see them having a particular barrow to push beyond picking the best candidate. They have both been in successful professional environments outside of Carlton.

Campbell is clearly on the panel for a particular skill set. Someone more knowledgeable than I will have a feel for whether Sheldon has a particular connection to one faction or the other on the board and whether that means anything.

I think they'll all be like that to a degree, but to a similar degree they'll still be looking at and judging Carlton and its needs through their own personal experience. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but at least one independent footy person could have been good too.

Doesn't matter now, let's hope these guys find the right coach and the board has the faith in the process.

Not sure Juddy should be involved given his preoccupation with the knee.

Ange is a great get.

Kenny Sheldon...? Has he had any recent involvement in AFL ?

Pretty sure he'll have plenty of spare time to fit his knee rehab in around his selection committee duties

Oh yes. Like what I think about an independent selection committee.
My first thoughts were only...yes!
How times have changed since the Elliott days.

The notion of independence is supposed to be political and financial. Judd's the only concern there, and he's presumably getting a medical insurance payout that will be negotiated before they sit down to interview.

Free from such ties (or so you hope), I'm happy to have people who are passionate about the club be involved in the process, because presumably they won't get defensive or egotistical about it. They'll go the extra mile and pair it with their knowledge and skills.

What happens now?

I'm assuming it would be frowned upon if we approached candidates who are already full time assistants.

So, do we wait till their teams are finished for the year?

That is a really good group I reckon.

Ange brings super impressive man management and leadership knowledge.
Also really smart having Judd too.

Good move to all involved.

The concern voiced via the AFLCA was about our requirements in September overlapping with finals preparations. So if we hire someone who is coaching a finals team, just be prepared to wait until they have finished their run.

There are precedents for assistant coaches walking during finals campaigns. Neeld is one that comes to mind, but I was kinda hoping I could remember a more successful example.
