We still suck at zone defending; it goes to shit when Simpson is off the field.

Even when Ratten installed a zone defence we couldn't nail it; we had to trade for plodders like Laidler to institute it.

he will won't he?

... and by doing this, he will be forgetting mick the micro manager was running the show and wouldn't allow line coaches to implement anything but mick's own startegy.

He did inherit the system under Ratten, and was part of the coaching group that nuked it from orbit and handed us 1v1 footy. I'm interested to see how he can improve something he holds at least some responsibility for.

I'm at the game. Systems and structures are okay. Just not good enough. Basic skills errors cost us. Working hard and effort okay. Unfortunately that's what we have sunk to.

Cripps work rate is impressive. Menzel either lazy or unfit or both. Please leave Buckley in defence. Just needs time.

Judd getting injured was awful. Never seen MCG so quiet

It was eerie, wasn't it.
Luckily we weren't playing Essendon* or they would all have been cheering.

If Barker can get them playing like this every week, would be a certain coach next year....

Especially composure going into the 50. It's like we're re-learning how to play after the mess Mick made. Like being in round 1 again rusty. It will get better if we continue with that effort.

Menzel was injured during the year so I'm thinking he's not fit and hence down on confidence. That can make you look lazy. He'll be a good player for us, just not this year. I'm thinking a couple of injury patches have affected Walker's form too.

I'm really keen to know how much of our improvement is due to Barks and how much is just due to Mick being gone?

Jamo was on ABC pre-game and said the players felt responsible for Mick's sacking and therefore were determined to make sure we got better post-sacking as otherwise sacking mick would've been a waste etc.

Jamo was also glowing in his praise of Barks. Saying he would make a fantastic senior coach in the future. He went above the usual/expected compliments.

I like that Barks has given the boys freedom. And I love that we finally beat a team in UNCONTESTED possessions.

Yes, very much so. We're still in the Anyone But Mick (ABM) honeymoon zone, and there was always going to be a dead cat bounce once Barks took over.

I just hope Stewy Dew is taking plenty of notes.

Why would you be surprised at that? You can't set a zone when 3 or 4 of your players are running around tagging.
If we want to set up a pure zone, the 18 players on the field have to guard specific space, not players. Any compromise is simply opening up avenues for the opposition to use.
We haven't set up a reasonable zone or press for 3 years.

I'd be giving Barker kudos for releasing the tags and allowing the players the opportunity to set up properly, not blaming him. It will just take a bit of time to re-adjust.
