the bit about becoming disillusioned with Mick's gameplan/ forward structure is a pivotal bit of news which is only going public for the first time.

Yep, agree, the fact that there is meant to be any forward structure is a revelation to me.

2mil - 4 years from Adelaide

1.1mil - 3 years from Carlton?

We offered him 360k per season?

Yep couldn't afford him because supposedly Daisy is worth 700k a season!! :banghead:

Is the Betts error a central cause of our current predicament or just a convenient medium to scapegoat Malthouse?

Eddie wouldn't turn things around in isolation.
But I knew you couldn't lose a player like Eddie..
Not only could Eddie kick goals but he also set the ground alight.
People go to the football to watch blokes like Eddie and fev...

Yeah well Carlton 1980s with Carlton today.
You see it's not so much about the players on the field as the club itself.
The players only are a crystallisation of what we are.
It's uncanny isn't it?

I always tell people that when they bag the players these days.

You can't expect a club that doesn't tick the right boxes to be leading things on field.
Which is why the rebuild will fail again...

My point is we keep focussing on symptoms, peripheral issues.
How about this one? IF Rocca can turn Casboult from a 1.5 kick to a 4.2, was there an option in Carlton's favour next year?
IF we are paying him for 2 days and he is working 5, are we willing to pay him what he is worth?
I predict if we don't get ahead of the bell curve on this, he will be at Collingwood next year or elsewhere with Malthouse

I always see Casboult as one in ten.
One good game in ten.

Elsewhere with Malthouse.
No one else was idiotic enough to pick him up 3 years ago and no one will be when he's gone.
The decision to push the money toward Thomas instead of Eddie is just another bitter taste of the legacy he will leave.

As for peripheral issues, you can sook all you want about players drafted 5-10 years ago. (Chris Johnson, Hartlett Etc)
The reality is at least half the players involved in the weekends effort were recruited under Malthouses reign. The rest were re-signed or elevated onto the senior list under his reign.
Have a look at where we sit on the ladder. Thats the reality.

Eddie never really consistently performed for us.
The times he did perform he was a rare shining light.

It's amazing that Eddie's contribution since he left has been totally downplayed.

Since debuting in 2005, he never played less than 18 games. His goal output has always been remarkably consistent and he elevated his game in 2011 and 2012 and was named in the All Australian squad of 40. When Fevola left, Eddie led the forward line and was a good influence around the club. Your leading forward should be paid at least 500k, doesn't matter what size he is.

Loved Eddie and ithink we should have upped the offer to him but he did tend to go missing in big games.

Eddie Betts is and always has been a flat track bully ... great against poor sides and poor against great sides.

But of course now that he has left Carlton he is a superstar.

Be interesting to see how Adelaide supporters view the trade if a) he goes missing in the finals and b) they lose Dangerfield and/or Sloane.

Carlton had Eddie for 9 years. He kicks more goals in his one season with Adelaide than he ever did with carlton.
His last season when he was asking for 4 years x 500k he kicked 27 goals. If we gave him that money and his output was similar, what would people have said then.
He was often unfit at Carlton, had multiple issues with alcohol allegedly, most of which weren't publicised.

It was a business decision to let him go, the club showed some maturity. May end up being wrong but it wasn;t flawed.
