I watched the first half with my son tonight. He is five. His mother passed away from cancer six months ago. You don’t need to get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to kick a sack of leather around a park to have a blessed life. You just need to make it through without having to explain to a child that their mother is dying.

He loves the Blues. The song is one of first sounds he heard. I sang it to him in the delivery suite when the midwives took my wife to the bathroom. He stopped crying. We still sing it every night at bed time. When my wife was in hospital interstate for treatment, and we were both away for weeks at a time, he taught it to his grandfather (a league man) and made him sing it at bedtime instead.

This year is the first year that he has actually watched football. So he doesn’t really know the Blues of course, and is as interested in the fixture on my smartphone as he is in the game. He just loves them because I do. But he doesn’t understand why we keep losing when we are team that never lets you down.

He started Auskick last week. His club are the Giants. The Giants are second, he gets that much. He likes the Bulldogs too because their mascot looks fierce and such details are important to five year olds.

I know how this story ends because it is the story of why my father supports Collingwood and I do not. We are losing the next generation, like we lost the one before that. That’s not the tragedy though. The tragedy is, I’m not sure I can remember why I would want him to stay. He has been let down enough.

Good post.

Do what you can to keep him a Blue.

If you think it's worth the effort.

If the players couldn't do it for Mick on this milestone, it makes you wonder...

Then again, the players shouldn't require a milestone of any kind, to give it their very best effort for the Carlton Football Club.

If Cloke had kicked straight we would have lost by 100 points. That is what we deserved. We lost in all facets of the game tonight coaching, effort and football smarts.

We shouldn't sack the coach. We always do that. Mick should coach out the year. Let's see what happens next week. He knows that our effort was insipid. He could not (or would not) explain it to the media as to why this was the case. That's fine. There are some things that need to be kept in house. We know that standards are set by our leaders. Given that they won't set one Mick now needs to set a standard. Effort is required by all his players. Those who don't want to play are dropped to the reserves.

He needs to make a statement. Gibbs should be dropped. Jones should be dropped. Perhaps others. Henderson is injured. He was awful anyway. I don't like two lumbering ruckmen in our side, but neither was our worst. Into the side must come players that care. Who they are I don't know. We need players that can make smart decisions and kick to our players not the opposition.

If Mick can turn the team around then he deserves to be considered for an extension. If we play the same type of garbage for the rest of the year then he should go and we should turn the list over again. We don't want players who can't get a game at another club. We need the astute use of early draft picks and eventually we should bring quality into our list. Oh and we need a coaching group that can actually develop our players' skills. I haven't seen much of that lately.

And Mathieson... Keep your mouth shut! You have had your say and now we are worse off! Thanks for your help. It is not needed!

Not to worry Nightcrawler.

My kids were Freo fans, but I converted them to being Blue baggers. They are still the same bubs, doesn't change anything. Now I feel bad that they changed for me.

Losing a mum at 5 , jesus. It's all small potatoes after that man.

Kicking 2 goals to half time is just embarrassing. At least score to give supporters especially the young ones some excitement.

We have shit tall forwards so just play Yarran and Menzel forward just to give me something to watch! Football is entertainment after-all

Where do we get our cheap/fluke type goals from anymore? It kills us. We struggle for every goal.

Yarran has one more week on the sidelines, but yes I agree. In the meantime Walker needs to go forward.

I don't disagree with any of that. What hurts is that it's pretty much the same conversation we've been having for over 10 years, save for a few fleeting moments of sunshine during the gloom.

First game I've attended this year. It was a pretty good night. Weather was lovely, good seat, the company of Moshe and the lovely Sarah and the dimmies weren't too bad.

Just a pity about the football.

And the lack of effort of our players.

And the @#$%&! idiot with the microphone at the breaks.

And the flower wrestler wanker doing ads for something that has nothing to do with the football.

And the stupid competitions.

And the fact that it was harder to talk to your friends during the breaks than the actual game.

And the lack of atmosphere.

And "BongoCam".

And the contrived nature of every single moment that didn't directly involve the football.

Not sure when my next game will be.

Good post.

If you think it's worth the effort.

what the players are doing right now is theft and vandalism. they are stealing money. outright. to be paid for that continued gutless tripe is criminal activity.

I lost count of the amount of contests we backed out of last night V collingwood. we avoided the contest, steered well clear of or deadset squibbed in the face of a collingwood player. we jogged, while they ran, we went to ground and gave up while they chased and tackled. 81 tackles to them, 49 to us. they had 140 more uncontested possessions.

the fundamental errors, handballing behind players, kicking over their heads, at their feet – from 20 metres away! not tackling, not talking, not helping their mate with a shepherd or simply telling them they're hot. the hurried, headless chook, round the body disposal, just hocking it 50 metres in the air and 15 metres forward out of blind, unmitigated panic. that is vandalism. they are defacing our jumper and everything it stands – well stood – for.

it's well past embarrassing, it's now criminal what they're doing.

the club culture and playing for the jumper, those days ended the day we drafted 3 potatoes with our back-to-back number one picks, after purposely tanking to get them. One's, perpetually injured, the other two softer than baby custard. somewhere in those draft picks and tanking, a disconnect happened where the players lost everything about what playing for Carlton is about.

and now onto our third coach since our tanking, that culture still exists and runs far deeper than at anytime before it.

... but, the players only play this half-hearted, gutless way, because they're allowed to. It's tolerated. it's now ingrained into the club so deep, we need major invasive surgery to remove it.

that botox'd Dr. idiot with all the money sitting in our coaches box, doing what exactly? We are corrupt and always have been. but, now we're a league wide laughing stock. I heard Ratten was at a restaurant last night with a group of people. Ratten was laughing like a maniac at the TV every time cfc embarrassed itself – which was often, and that was just until halftime when he left.

this is the lowest point i can remember since 1979, when i went to my first game at princess park.

---------------------------

Carlton as a club, what do we need to do to turn this around?

I suggest it starts at the top. once and for all, piss off all the rich benefactors who prop up the club financially. they have single-handedly turned the club into a rich man's play thing.

I would rather go tits up and sink, never to exist again... then to exist like this. Those loathsome bastards allowed to buy their way into our club – mouth off at will, buy their way into coaching boxes, have a say in footballing dept. decisions like which coach to hire – without due process etc etc. All of that needs to stop, because until it does, we will always be this way.

Start by dismissing all of them. They are taking us under faster than we can tread water.

Once free from their burden, we can conduct internal reviews and audits. trade or delist every single leech on this team, and even if we're coming dead last for the next 2-3 seasons while we rebuild, at least we're rebuilding the right way. from ground zero.

I'm so sorry to hear about your wife nightcrawler.
That is the worst.
yes, we will lose many.
my niece last nite said she doesn't want to go to another game this year.
she was disgusted, and embarrassed by our team.

One positive for me was, I no longer care if we trade Gibbs.
already didn't care about murph for some time now.

my only wanna keeps from older players are Hendo & Yaz.
Simmo IS Carlton, but if he wants to go, he should be allowed to.
he deserves so much better than us!!
Disgrace that he is not Captain, and Murph is.

The only good thing i see from this is a board spill.
Please do it!!!!
Send all the corrupt and the ridiculous ala Geoffrey to Siberia for good.
I'd rather be a poor and honest club, getting by on bake sales, than put up with Mathieson & Edelstein any longer.

We cannot hope to call back our soul while we continue to sell to these little devils.

There is already evidence of lost generation of Carlton supporters. At Auskick these days, there are very few Carlton jumpers. When my eldest did Auskick (he's nine years older), there was a hell of a lot more Blues Supporters.

I was borderline to renew my membership for this year.

Stupidly, I did.

What a waste of time and money.

I think I'm done. Like the Melbourne game last year. That was my tipping point.

I fell asleep and missed the second half.

I was grateful when I woke up.

Can someone fill me in on how Ellard went after half-time?

Thanks
