Not sure why you wouldn't start a rebuild without a thorough search for the best available....

Jason Dunstall should lead the panel which appoints the new coach.

That would be good.

I'd also look to get an external rating of our list.

I just hope that whoever they get (assuming MM gets the boot) is allowed to bring their own hand-picked assistants with them. There needs to be cohesion and understanding in our coaching ranks, not "DA BOSS" + a bunch of yes-men. It's not just about the coach anymore, it's about the whole department.

This was my biggest issue with getting MM as coach (along with the lack of process). That by throwing so much at him we were left with many of the same nuff-nuffs as before, and could only bring in others no-one else wanted. Another example of "Old Carlton" thinking.

I think MM could still be a great resource and mentor to whoever comes in, but the Collingwood debacle showed us he has zero interest if he's not the boss. But without a solid group of assistants around him, his lack of modern tactical nous has been exposed.

What sets him apart as footy headhunter?

what will go against him is that if we gave him 2 years after we openly claimed were rebuilding the media will say how can you give a coach charged with rebuilding a team 2 years when youve said you need 3 years???

strategic mistake.... look out!

Maybe this year is the first year of 3???

He didn't care about external pressure when helping to appoint Clarkson. He will know what traits to look for.

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/09/ ... m=storyrhs

Quote:
Hawks interim chief executive Jason Dunstall and his fellow coaching sub-committee faced stinging criticism for their performance in the coaching search, missing out on Terry Wallace and Rodney Eade and failing to get through to Mark Harvey.

"For us it was just a matter of keeping our nerve and staying committed to what we set out to do in the first place," Dunstall said.

"We're embarking on a youth policy and we want someone who can develop and teach and educate and nurture these people.

"We're not talking about a quick fix, this is about the club going forward and being set up for 2010."

He appointed Clarkson 11 years ago. As we say, footy's come a long way since (the argument to sack MM), so what makes you think he still know what it takes to pick the right coach?

No one knows for sure, but read below of the thoughts he had about Hawthorn and the similarities to Carlton. Who else would you prefer?

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/ ... 1117576956

Quote:
With the most unlikely of people, all-time great Hawk Jason Dunstall, sitting temporarily in the chief executive's chair, Hawthorn realised it had been too insular in the past and vowed not to be so in the future.

An unofficial in-house pursuit was catch-phrased "Refresh, Revitalise, Rebuild". It translated to committing to a brand new Hawthorn.

It rubbed many Hawk old-timers up the wrong way, and meant Rodney Eade, Terry Wallace and Gary Ayres would not be returning home.

And it produced a long shot as coach.

Alastair Clarkson, a former battling player with North Melbourne and Melbourne, who had had coaching stints with Port Adelaide as well as in the SANFL and VFL, became the future of the club.

Dunstall, simply, got his man.

It has been said that virtually at the point of first interview contact, Dunstall wanted Clarkson at Hawthorn.

In the eyes of "The Chief", as Dunstall the CEO was nicknamed by Sam Newman, Clarkson had just what Hawthorn needed.

A ruthless hard edge, a diverse coaching background, a plan and, crucially, he was once a schoolteacher.

For a club that was about to stock its playing list with kids, a teaching background became an important facet of the Clarkson CV.

Yeah I can't help but feel we're still plucking a tried and true individual just for the association. If I were a board member I'd want to hear their vision for a modern football club and how Carlton's stocks stack up with that.

Who would yourself/Nick select? Remember Dunstall had to convince the Hawks board about the appointment.

I'd just want to hear his view about the organisational structure and function of the coaching department first.

Nah, we should just give it to a member of the '95 premiership team. What's Mil Hanna doing these days?
