I still don't see why Malthouses game plan is any worse (or better) than any other. It's just tactically different. And it has *clearly* evolved since 2012.

Let's face it, the crux of the problem is that he inherited a SHIT list and was forced by Kernahan and Swann to tell the world it was OK and that we were close to a flag. When Malthouse accepted the position, I suspect he had no clue how shitful things really were. I also suspect he clued in pretty quickly after walking into PP.

Our trading/recruiting has been better in the last two seasons than in the past 10 years. We've chopped a metric shit-ton of dead wood from our list: Garlett, Robinson, McLean, Duigan, Bootsma, Hampson, Lucas... OMFG what a who's who of under-performing flogs. We've replaced them with the likes of Docherty, Everitt, Thomas, KJ, Jones, Whiley... players that we know can play. We've drafted Boekhurst, Smith... who to my mind have already shown a bit. Give the man a chance to mould this bunch into a winning unit. I believe it can be done, and I believe Malthouse needs to be given a chance to continue what he started.

We're going to turn heads this year. The first quarter against Collingwood was a glimpse of things to come. We're going to play relentless, burst football for a period of time in each quarter.... hit the scoreboard.... then collapse back and defend, and score heavily on the rebound as well. Watch this space.

Disagree with most of what you have written ... but with regards to your last paragraph ... I sure hope you are right.

I guess the only thing we can do is wait and see. Let's revisit this discussion after round 10.

Its just an opinion, but I think youre spot on...it is a wait and see game at this stage.

Its MM's last year of the current contract, so lets see if he's set the club up for a better season with the adjustments he's made in the last 2 years. From what I have been told from people who know players and what Ive heard in the media the players definetely love MM and believe in him. There is a sense of belief amongst the club, so all the positivety and negativity today means @#$%&! all, and we should all wait till the half way mark before we start judging MM, and even then there's still another 11 games of footy to play out. 22 rounds is a lot of footy.

Its a different list today to that in 2012, and other teams have progressed far better than us since then, which has nothing to do with MM and Ratten.

We can only guess if 2012 was our ceiling, but who knows. My money is on a huge improvement on our previous year and hope we surpass our efforts of 2012, because I still have nightmares about that game and the umpires.

The first quarter against Collingwood was two teams failing to defend each other properly. We'll flatten bad teams with that football, but we'll need to take the work rate up a notch and the positional awareness up three notches to beat top 4 teams.

What we showed late last year is more what we should be after: mindful of team defence, then moving the ball forward as quickly as the opposition allow, using the width of the ground to stretch their zone if necessary.

Taking stock at the bye makes sense because we'll have played:

Two teams from 2014's top 6 (Sydney and Geelong)
Five teams from 2014's middle 6 (Essendon*, Richmond, Adelaide, West Coast and Collingwood)
Three teams from 2014's bottom 6 (St Kilda, GWS and Brisbane)

Will give us a good indication of where we're at, and how we can expect to go against similarly placed sides in the back half of the year.

Mostly fair comments. Which is why we shouldn't be pushed into re-signing Mick.
Let's see how the year pans out. It's not like he'll have plenty of suitors knocking down his door.

I base all my season predictions on pre-season matches.

Had St Kilda winning the premiership till last night.

The Club holds all the cards.
Just got to avoid the media pressure. It's going to be there.

Madhouse is content when the coaches around him are of no threat. There is nothing he needs to worry about with respect to Barker, Wiley etc. He selected his team ... and he is happy with them ... except when he wants to take the focus off himself.

Viva the Madhouse!

Yep. But Hawthorn Beat St Kilda, Collingwood beat Hawthorn, Carlton beat Collingwood therefore Carlton = Premiers. Put that in the bank!
