Anyone can get ruckmen wrong. Geelong let Mummie go then had to poach McIntosh

What disturbed me was the lack of clarity in the strategy.
In 2005 we used Pick 1 in PSD to get McLaren
In 2006 we drafted 4 ruckmen inc a 1st rounder, 2 PSD picks inc no 1 and a rookie selection
in 2007 we picked Kreuzer at no 1
In 2008 we gave a 2nd and ?4th rounder for Warnock

Once you had picked Kreuzer, Hampson and rookied Jacobs, why chase warnock????
This is an important position but you only need 1 good ruckman really.
7 years later we are still paying the price. We have to rely on a top up from Wiilliamstown while our old rookie is dominating

Games changed. Was drifting towards a key ruck and a ruck/forward but the sub rule made it concrete. We had a great stable of rucks when you could use two and two of them were talented and seemingly versatile.

Imagine if we had a fit Kreuzer and Hampson sitting around instead of the current set up; we'd have probably drafted a young ruck last year.

I am looking forward to the "West Coast wanted Bower for Judd but we insisted they take Kennedy" story.

speaking of west coast and ruckmen, Nicnat is one of the most over rated players in the game. It wont be long till Lycett becomes number one and WC are looking at trading Nic.

Lycett's on 400k+ after playing 20 games. Believe me he is playing every week regardless of Nic Nat.

..wc made the same mistake we did and flogged nicnat too soon, if you limit his athleticism he becomes average, not a good footy brain..

..watch the dogs run Boyd into the ground too..

..it's not the position, it's their size.. ..too big to play such a physically demanding game when they are still so young, plus he will still be used in the ruck a fair bit just the same.. ..like he was at giants..

In the end though. More of a ruckman thing.

..boyd will spend a third of his career, if not more,, running around in the ruck.. ..krooz has spent half his games as a forward.. ..boyd has a massive contract, they will run him into the ground.. ..clubs don't know how to ease their really big players not the game.. ..just because a kid can play, doesn't mean they should.. ..not so many senior games so early.. ..what position a kid was drafted as means little these days..

..its the Robert walls school of coaching, 'give him a run in the ruck'.. ..boyd is 200cm and may even grow a bit more to get over two meters.. ..hundred kg's and maybe more, that's a lot of still developing flesh and bone to be crashed and bashed.. ..there is no more 'hiding in the forward line'.. ..will need to run up and down the ground, will take ruck work in the fed line, will be smashed into by seasoned defenders.. ..and he will be used in the ruck, plenty in his early years.. ..dogs gave heaps to get him and paying him heaps, there's no way they will take a safe cautious approach to his first couple of seasons at 1mil. a year..

..can remember Boyd talked up as a forward ruck.. ....and ultimately it matters little where he played in juniors, his coach will dictate what position he is now.. ..has played in his afl career to date, both positions.. ..will continue to do so too..

..we can keep track of how the dawgs use him.. ..I reckon he will spend a fair bit of time used in the ruck..
