I mean look at this:

STANDARD MEMBER BENEFITS
    Membership Card
  • Option of selecting Members Cap or Members Scarf
*(Please note: Members Scarf will be the default option if you do not make a selection)
  • Lanyard & Ticket Wallet
  • Bumper Stickers
  • Season Guide magazine (one per household)
  • Inside Carlton magazine (one per household)
  • Digital Birthday Message from the Players
  • Free entry to Northern Blues Visy Park home games
  • Member discounts for official Carlton merchandise at the Carlton Shop
  • Exclusive Breaking News emails
  • Exclusive “From the Coach" email after every match
  • Weekly Team Selection
  • Total Years of Membership Recognition Lapel Pin – recognised by Club milestones

I've highlighted 3 items which should not be included on the standard 3-game membership; it's never going to be cost-effective for them to do so.

Hell, they can give them a digital copy of the magazine, they can have securely locked away online and have a members-only area where they can gate content if they so wish. That saves them printing costs.

@#$%&! fix that and make it a 4-game membership, then package it for $75, and they will sell.

I got all that except for the games obviously on the $50 membership.

Let's compare to Essendon*'s closest package:

http://membership.essendonfc.com.au/pac ... exi_3_Game

  • General admission access for up to 3 home games
Entry is subject to capacity and may not be guaranteed. Additional fees and charges may apply if a match reaches capacity as you will need to upgrade to a reserved seat to gain entry (subject to availability).
  • Access to member presale for ANZAC Day – general admission access is not available for this match. You must upgrade to a reserved seat during the advertised member presale to guarantee entry. Upgrade prices will be published here once confirmed.
  • Access to purchase additional tickets for guests at the full rate (not available during presale for Etihad Stadium)
  • Access to member presale for weeks 1-3 Finals games when Essendon* participate
  • Receive three member-exclusive emails delivered straight from the coaching staff to your inbox each week (where email address is provided):
  • Team selection - sent Thursday evenings
  • Post-game video interview from the coach - sent soon after each game
  • Post-game write-up ('Craig's Comments' from Neil Craig), including a summary of the game just played as well as the plan for the coming week – sent Monday after each game
  • 2 editions of the Bomber Magazine
  • Full voting rights (18 years+)
  • Member pack including scarf (men), pashmina (women), lanyard, lapel pin, fixture magnet and bumper sticker (hover mouse over image to view Squadron pack) <--- this is as described, plus a beanie
  • Free entry to Essendon* VFL home games at Windy Hill (upon presentation of membership card)
  • 10% discount on all full priced Essendon* merchandise at any Bomber Shop location (excludes memorabilia and some exclusive items)

So they skimp on the cap (in favour of a cheap beanie) and magazines and look: $75! Say what you want about the players and coaches, their membership department and I seem to have good ideas.

Now Collingwood's:

http://membership.collingwoodfc.com.au/ ... ion-3-game

  • General Admission access to three home games that Collingwood participates in at the MCG and Etihad Stadium in the 2015 AFL Premiership Season*
  • Free access to Collingwood's VFL home games in 2015
  • Priority access to Weeks 1-3 of the 2015 AFL Finals Series (if Collingwood is participating)
  • Personalised membership card and lanyard
  • Bumper sticker
  • Access to the Member Choice program to choose the merchandise item the member would like to receive in their membership pack (up to December 23, 2014)
  • Bucks' Brief weekly video report
  • Two editions of 'In Black & White' magazine
  • Access to Magpie Rewards member benefits program
  • Member pricing on club merchandise

Collingwood don't even give ANZAC pre-sale access on the standard 3-game, and they skimp on the mags also. Unsure on the goodies bag but even if it's a cap AND a scarf, they're still cutting costs more than us and charging $95 while having the aura of a much more successful club that will deliver on-field results.

We're in @#$%&! fantasy land with our packages.

Which is fine because that's a support membership. The idea that $45-55 pays for the seating is a bit rich.

I don't care how many members say they want the cap, if the cap is $15 for them to buy at the shop and we give them 4-games for $75-80, they won't give a shit.

EDIT: The cap is $20 before member discounts.

So why did the club approach the AFL for membership assistance and advice rather than be inspired and guided by the GREAT YOUNG CARLTON PROFESSIONALS THINK TANK?

Has the YCP think tank come up with anything innovative yet? We know from their spin that they want the Blues to be the biggest BUSINESS orientated club in the AFL. Have they made headway on that front yet? Or are they waiting for the gaming revenue to save their arses ladies and gentlemen....

At the very least we should be able to sign over a few Bomber_Now_Blues this year.

Hey Cret, like a good private equity firm we'll never know what goes on until they've taken out what they wanted from it and left the rest.

Very simplistic view...

Yep, don't go back to when the blues were at the forefront, winning games and bringing home flags.... We mustn't go there ladies and gentlemen, when members felt part of something, were respected and could interact with the players, the club and its officials...

In 1995 we barely had 16,000 members and turning over less than 15 million dollars each year. Do you remember that year! Not a bad season wasn't it Teaguey?

Yes ladies and gentlemen let's celebrate the good modern times when recycled players such as Teague are winning our best and fairest and the team can't win 5 games in succession for more than a decade.

You didn't quite understand the essence of my post. It was posted to highlight a period where the club was inclusive, respected its membership base and players and officials interacted with the members.

The number of members we have at the moment is the least of our problems.

Have you noticed what our team and club have been doing over the past decade or so?
Sheer excellence isn't it Teaguey?

..scary thought Mr TAW,

Reminds me of the Howard decision in 2006 that allowed foreign ownership of out major TV networks. The NINE, TEN AND 7 networks were bought out by private equity groups in NY and Toronto. The content has been very impressive ever since Mr TAW....I am sure everyone in Australia is over the moon with reruns of the Brady bunch, weight loss sagas, celebrity cooking shows, junk infomercials, fat busters and fancy vacuum cleaners

If you suggested to Kerry Packer he could have another TV network to run along side Ch 9 - I don't think he would be launching a home shopping channel or running back to back Big Bang Theory...

I've messaged every Carlton supporter I know that doesn't have a membership (13 ppl) and told them to buy memberships - if only the 3-game one. Haven't given them my membership ID either because I don't want them to think I'm just trying to save money next year...

IMO the 3-game membership should be pushed harder. It's not a true indication of "serious" support, but it helps bump the numbers up, which gives the appearance of strong support, which helps bump the numbers up, which... you get the point.

Really, anyone who plans to watch 3 games this year should be educated into buying one of these memberships. There is *no* reason for someone who just buys tickets before the game *not* to buy a 3-game membership.

Perhaps a good idea would be to arrange a function for 3-game members *only* to reconnect with the club? The club could come clean and say "we dropped the ball, we miss you, we want you back. Buy a 3-game membership, come to the Collingwood, Essendon*** and Richmond home games and get a stamp... and we'll invite you to an exclusive meet and greet with all the players..."

I dunno. I'm not in marketing. The idea needs thought, but we could be doing a lot more.

It's currently $95 for a 3 game membership, which is more than 3 reserved seats at the full rate. You can see why they've effectively changed it to a 4-game membership: we were gouging.

It's still more than a walk-up seat at Etihad, but less than one at the G.

Spot on, these 3 game memberships (now 4 game) are not good value. It is cheaper to pay each week and buy a hat from the merchandise store.

Yes, he's a character alright.

Ohh, remember that one time he had a run, bounce and almost did something. The kids were jumping all over the lounge "hey dad, that Andrayoos is so much more exciting than Eddie, thank god he's gone"

Often go and buy gear from the Carlton shop ( birthdays, Christmas etc), is there a member's discount....no...but I can get a members discount at Sportmart....???
But I do get a "Custom AFL" voucher with the members pack...which has nothing to do with Carlton?

One example ...and there are lots of areas where you just don't feel like you belong

Almost every trip to Melbourne we visit the Carlton shop and hope we catch the boys training. I have 2 young Carlton fanatics who barrack for Carlton no matter what. What if I give up going to training coz its a waste of time? What if I stop subscribng to Foxtel? What if the people in the Carlton shop continue to look unhappy, dreary and unconnected to the fan base?

I have never seen anyone working in that shop smile. That's the face of Carlton. Put people who are passionate about Carlton be the interface for the club.

absolutely.
stopped going years ago due to the 'tude' coming off those gals.

Does the club send out Birthday cards anymore?

Nope. also, rang to get a card sent to my dad..lifelong faithful member who was dying.
Knew it'd mean a lot to him. Months later..no card..rang again. Card arrived too late.

Is the club still stuffing members around with their seating? ie taking them away then promising better only to split families up?

nope.
still a paid up member..still going..I like catching up with family there. sooo much wrong with
our club and the AFL's attitude in general.

They need to cut prices next year to create a new buzz about our memberships.

They should also revamp the memberships with new packages, website and a more user friendly process. The time has come for the club to take a hit and give more back to the fans in a effort to bridge the gap.
