Great weather, ground a picture, decent crowd. Fantastic to have some footy back.
Overall, as Cazz said, blew out cobwebs.
Key thing for me was no-one looked liked they won't be a footballer- been years since we could say that. Lots of NB guys - Murray looked good. Some handy blokes missing who probably in best side: Yaz, Gibbs, (K of course), Doc, Walker and ? so we definitely have more depth.
Reasonable intensity, plenty of run despite fatigue, reasonable skills. Game styles used all parts of the ground (including corridor!) and short and long kicks.
I might wimp out and let others do individual player analysis (40 of them!). I thought everyone showed something at different times. Recruits did what they were recruited to do (Jones, Tutt, BB) and we have options.
Judd starred, Cripps got better and better, Graham used it well.
Happy to try to respond to specific questions about players.

What are you doing home so early?
What happened to that German tourist girl?
Thanks for the report.

What did you think of Casboults game?

Thanks Big G. Out of the young guys we picked up, who looks to have the best fitness base that could see them play senior footy straight up?

Hard to say when it's the first official hit out and so many new guys. For example, Judd is famous for always being bent double with exhaustion 5 minutes in and 5 from the end but keeps going. Rotations were high so they obviously don't want massive fatigue.
Getting closer to answering your question, a lot of this years recruits played forward or back (Dick back pocket, Fields deep defence, Smith would be used in bursts. DVR seemed to run out the game well and maintained foot skills. Foster didn't play. BB I didn't see a lot of so can't give an opinion. Gowers didn't seem to be troubled.
Really, any of these kids playing early will be a bonus - but they can all play.
To me, of more interest is whether Cripps and Graham are ready - and I think they are.

What did you think of Casboults game?

1. Old man
2. Boyfriend
3. No impact early but worked his way into it. Better for the run. To me he is plenty fit enough- confidence seemed good. Will be interesting how the forwards work together and who midfielders kick to.

I was impressed overall, and it looks like we will have much more competition for spots this year than in recent times. Watto was great, but we will see how he goes when there is a bit more pressure on, he is a great kick for goal though.

Smith looked good, I like how he was giving it to Daisy a bit. Daisy looked decent, though his kicking still worries me.

Cripps I agree was fantastic, and hopefully doing some of the coalface work will free up Judd a bit more.

Looking forward to our first NAB Challenge game.

I didn't see any Essendon* spies either, thought they may of been there scouting our Northern Blues players.

Cazz, good write up, thank you.

I'm most intrigued by Casey Byrne - where will he line-up if he was to get a gig in the season proper? I was most impressed with him in Ireland in the previous years Int Rules but saw him as a HFF or wing, however with most new players to the game, Irish especially, it's easier to run them from HB to run onto the ball rather than the harder attacking HF position.

Will we see Cripps, injury permitting, in the centre for round 1?

We could well see Cripps in the middle in round one - but that's without me doing the numbers: Bell, Curnow, Carrazo, Judd, Murphy, Gibbs all candidates.

Surprised to discover MM wasn't even at the game.

Only caught the second half but liked what I saw of Gowers on a few occasions.

Ciaran Byrne*

He's played mostly as a HF for Northern, though has had stints at HB.

No excuse what so ever for a senior coach not being there. At worse, one would think the intra club game would have been moved to another time to accomodate a 'family funeral'.
