Yep Ronnie D used to get Farmer all the time and generally did well.

Him and Rhino use to love going for the big run and crash thru the pack but used to nearly always get caught

mine would have to be luke o'sullivan is he somewhat of a distant relative to me.

Brad pearce was a favourite, great 3rd option especially in 95..

Quote:
Oliver was F@%&#! awesome and was a rare talent in that he was skinny but very strong.I think Jakovich was in shock on how good the number 3 was.The Castlemaine kid was the ultimate bush Coleman.

I reckon there was a better bush player than oliver who travelled down to melb but didnt fulfil his potential and his brother plays for carlton still now. Damian Houlihan nearly kicked a ton 2 years in a row when he was 15 and 16 in the ovens and murray arguably the best country footy league in the country. Got lost big time when in melb, but when he went back to the minor leagues basically did what he want when he want, and nothing empahisied this more when in 2000 he declared he would kick 10 in a gf for corowa rutherglen at the start of the year and did so when he led corowa rutherglen to their first grand final in over 30 years.

Some good choices here.

Liked Kennyhunter's choice of Richard Dennis - he played a great game in the 87 grand final.

Also liked Dannyboy's choice of Brian Kekovich - he was laconic and cool as doull - but on the forward line.

Luke O'Sullivan - good choice.

Does Brent Crosswell rate in this criteria considering he played under 100 games for the blues? - if so, he would have be about the top of the list.

Flipper gets my vote too. I had #19 on my jumper & was shattered when he had to retire. I was so pissed off when people thought I had the #19 for Brad Pearce that I hated him for quite a while...

John Hynes gets my 2nd vote. Won the ressies best & fairest & I thought he would be a good player for us but it was not to be. He was also a very funny guy.

Mark Majerczak 3 votes. He came from Fawkner which was where I grew up & I knew him from the local footy club. He also had a cool surname that no-one could pronounce & his mum was fullmont's kindergarten teacher.

I remember Phillips snapping the winning goal against Coll at Waverley in 89 :-D

Verbs, the Blues News with Fenech on the cover was to promote his upcoming fight at Optus. They had him holding up a Carlton jumper with Collo, but being a Pies man he was giving the thumbs down & pulling a really pissed off face! Great marketing Carlton
I also recall the James Cook interview you mentioned, pretty sure his fave music was Metallica

PS. Hey Danielle - Haami Williams

Three from me.

1. Fraser Murphy. Gutsy, cheeky little rover who was a cult figure at Carlton in the late eighties. Played in the '87 Flag side and later went to Collingwood. I eventually forgave him - because he didn't play a senior match for the mongrels.

2. Ted Hopkins. He played less than 50 games, but is a Blue Immortal.
If you don't know Teddy's story from the 1970 Grand Final - you should.

3. Ian Herman. A classy utility who wore jumper number 25 in our early 90's teams. He never claimed a regular place, but I remember him saving us from severe embarassment in a match against the Bad News Bears at Carrara. He snapped a beautiful goal over his shoulder from 40 metres out - winning the game with only seconds on the clock.

what about desie english....the dour, hard at it, totally reliable back pocket player. loved the way he went about his business.

much remembered about Peter Motley providing the troops with 1987 inspiration, but lest not forget Des and his inspirational battle with cancer.

what about mario bortolotto - big and dumb like. the days when we could play a permanent big guy in the back pocket - envied the way he was able to pull off two flags and in what was a champion back to back team in 81/82.

special mention for barry gill....ugly as all sin, looked like a 50 year old playing like a 24 year old in the 70 GF

Another Blues News had a photo of Justin Madden shaking a 15 year old Matthew Allan's hand...not sure why.

I loved getting those newspapers. I wish I still had them.

Remember the one with Jeff Fenech on the cover?

I don't...or do I? That rings a very faint bell.

I do remember one with an article on Darren Lehman who had crossed from SA to play for Victoria, and his cricket club was to be Carlton.

Another had a feature on what players "jobs" were. Ratten was a gardener. Peter Doyle was a groundskeeper at Princes Park. Dean a sparky.

Kouta's favourite drink was fanta and his career ambition was to play 100 games for Carlton. He didn't have a car. James Cook's dislike was "fake people".

I've still got a heap of Blues News at home somewhere. Used to love getting them and reading the player profile's.

When I was a kid they were all stars as far as I was concerned.

More recently I had a soft spot for the Rhino, and Brad Pearce.

Peter McConville; impassable in defence, and was regularly played at CHF where he kicked valuable goals for us; and was a great pack mark for his size.

Andy McKay....what a player!

ANyone remember how good Bruce Reid was for a couple of years? Then Ian Aitken for about 2 years, then Sexton who played great footy for many years.

Was it Barry or Bruce Reid? ....and did we recruit him Footscray?

Ian Aitken was a very good player the blues until that dirty little dog Alistair Clarkson sniped him
