Sorry bondi this will be a quick reply

I hope GWS succeed. From a person heavily involved in afl in western Sydney I wish them the best and would love to think they would assist us in developing the game. Unfortunately they are a joke in my eyes. My club is the oldest club in their real demographic, we were established in 1947 yet they have no idea we exist or shout I say choose to ignore us.

From a growth point of view the junior competition is western sydney is in a diabolical state. Those in charge of growing the game are happy to tick ok auskick kpis as proof there doing a great job. Presently in 2014 there were only 14 teams in the under 19 comp in syd afl acros 2 divs. in 2015 20 teams have nominated which suggests great growth. Wrong. Three of those teams are additional teams ie what I mean is the club will have div 1 n div 2 teams. Should th be admitted you will see up to 6 maybe 7 existing 19s disappear. Growth is great but not at the expense of the existing clubs. Oh by the way one team is one that previously existed another is a rep team from the Illawarra and the other is an afl initiative club lol

The worst thing GWS have done in my eyes other than ignore the clubs in western syd is to form an alliance with manly Warringah. Wtf could the possibly pick a less western sydney club. Mind you the are known as fibros by the seaside lol.

24 years of involvement in western sydney afl I believe gives me a pretty good understanding of the game and its issues in this region. To add to that being involved in a club that nearly died at the end of 2006 that only had 30 registered players in 2007 while we saved the club to over 200 senior players plus 40 women's members in 2014 should suggest I know n understand my market.

Great post from someone at the coalface but GWS is still doomed to be a bottomless pit. I haven't lived in Western Sydney for a good many years but the rising demographic is mainly Islanders/Maoris Asians and Middle Easterners. None of those groups is AFL -oriented. They are the ones the AFL thinks will be the backbone of the supporter base. It's different from the Gold Coast hinterland where the demographic has more of your affluent anglo-immigrant from the south of the country with an AFL or union background and their kids are registering with AFL teams because that's what's available.

To follow your logic through, Aussie rules is doomed long term nationally if we are to rely on your 'affluent Anglo immigrants' :screwy:

Actually GWS shouldn't be doomed. My club is made up of a real melting pot of people from diverse backgrounds. We have Asians Muslims etc. When I say Asians I mean Chinese, Vietnamese, Malaysians and Loation's, the muslims are Turks, Lebanese and African just of the top of my head. You can then add Greeks, Italians, Macedonians, Maltese, Armenian, Croations, Russians, Poles, Irish, Poms as well as your regular Koories and Anglo Aussies. Again that's just off the top of my head. Sorry the other thing I forgot was your Islanders, Maoris, Kiwis (white) Samoans. Again Just of the top of my head.

Actually GWS are doomed, those idiots think diversity is throwing the name behind a ladies team where they are predominately from Middle eastern Muslim backgrounds.. I have no problem with the Auburn ladies and to be honest they are a great bunch of girls but I cant for the life of me think why GWS continue to ignore our club (mind you the don't ignore our major partner who has 130000 members and 500,000,000 in assets).

That IS a melting pot. 18 races in one team is great news. I take it all back.

The historic significance of Stephen Silvagni's imminent return to the Carlton Football Club should not be underestimated. Nor should the political devastation to Carlton and personal pain to SOS himself inflicted as a result of the salary cap scandal that decimated the Blues.

Silvagni is expected to be installed at the club he served as a player for 312 games by Christmas, or certainly before the start of next season. He will take over the list management role that has not exactly been a jewel in the Blues' crown for many years. Far from it.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/s ... 1rb9w.html

(The Blues were also fined $930,000 for the salary cap cheating involving both players along with Stephen O'Reilly and Fraser Brown. It remains amazing that the Blues' salary cap penalties were significantly harsher than those more recently handed to Essendon***** for the Bombers' cavalier handling of their players' welfare with potentially harmful and illegal drugs.)

Only Carlton Cheats.

I'm all for sinking the boots into Essendon***, but they were fined $2m, their coach was suspended for a year and they were handed draft penalties as well. True, their draft penalties weren't as harsh as ours, but to say our penalties were "significantly harsher" is a little disingeneous, I think.

SOS spoke to one of my best mates sons recently about joining the Blues, he isn't eligible for the draft until next year - the lad will be playing at Bendigo Pioneers again next season, whilst his dad will be rapt if he gets drafted by an AFL club, he loves the Bombers and hates the Blues

I still remember going to the 99 prelim with my mate, I drove with a few mates and within a few seconds of the siren going he was gone, a very shattered man

So it's your mate who loves the Bombers or GOS?

I'm not sure what part of the GWS list management policy experience that he will bring screams success, and I don't think it is at all relevant to where we are at as a club. As the list has developed they have tried to go for established talent and ended up with a stack of plodders to fill out the list (Lamb, Addison, Gilham, Setanta, Palmer, Brogan, etc).

He has had the luxury of selecting young talent from the most picks ever afforded to an AFL team (notably missing Chad Wingard along the way) but they have been largely uncompetitive ever since their birth. Scully - BUST, Boyd - GONE, Adams - GONE, Tyson - GONE, Jaksch - GONE, O'Rourke - traded in at pick 2 and traded out for pick 18 a couple of years later.

Would love for him to succeed but the recent CV doesn't read well!

Considering most whinge at little to no strategic vision for the club I don't think think that's an issue for SOS in the list management position at GWS.

Can't blame him for young players being told to go there and not like living in a shit hole.

If you're winning in a sh!thole, you are more likely to stay.

Getting pumped every week (under the guise of long-term strategy) has also created a poor atmosphere in the stands with crowds of only 5k. See what has happened with Western Sydney Wanderers and their winning culture, the crowds have flocked. I'm prepared to not lay total blame at SOS' feet, any club willing to employ the bluster of Kevin Sheedy and any competition willing to stand by while the likes of Sheedy and Eddie McGuire racially vilify the people of western Sydney whilst trying to talk down the success of the Wanderers deserve the basket case that they have become.

Agree from the outside that post is 100% accurate, but I guess we aren't privy to how much outside influence there is from others to take/play certain players due to the GWS being a different kettle of fish to an established AFL club.

I too was amazed that with the first 5 picks they still couldn't land Wingard, but it turns out that at the interviews he was straight out with them about picking him being a waste of time as he'd be on the first plane out as soon as his contract expired.

I assume Synners is talking about Fraser Brown. If so perhaps we cant take his opinion as gospel (professional, not personal) due to how highly he rated Ratten as a coach.....

something about coaching this team with his eyes closed.

To be fair, Parkin identified Ratten as the best prospect as a senior coach from the group of players he coached at the Blues.
