The best mark I have seen live was Jezza at Waverly late 70's against Essendon*. Never made it on to T.V. unfortunately but he leapt way to early and then just stood on the pack like he was on top of a ladder and waited for the ball to arrive. (Fair Dinkum he hung there so long he could have rolled a smoke for himself and then one each for the pack as well).

Ah Jezza what a champion.

Something about the crowd looks a little off in this photo... can't put my finger on it.....

I just see a heap of one-eyed carlton supporters.

Maybe not the "best" mark ever but I'll always remember Callan Beasy in his first game for us in round 16, 2002 against St. Kilda at the Telstra Dome, took one of the best one handed marks you'll see. Can't remember all the exact circumstances surrounding it but he just seemed to leap and pluck it out of the air. Does anyone else remember this? I guess I'll remember Callan's time at Carlton for this mark!

That was a ripper, and if IRC it wasn't even nominated as a mark of the week.

Yeah you're right, I remember seeing it and thinking "that'll be up there with the marks of the year" but nothing was really made of it at all?! I'd love to see it again because I was absolutely convinced at the time and still am that that was one of the best marks I've seen!

....and if I recall (I was at the game and it was ssoon after he came on), he pulled it in one handed...not sure why it doesn't get repeated ad nauseum?

....and for the GREATEST mark of all time ...(in all aspcets)....

McKAY...to the wing.........

Probably Hunters that won mark of the year in 1983 I think.because it is totally unique because nobody would be that stupid.

Has to be Jezza's doesn't. I mean in the biggest game of the year, there could be no bigger stage to take one of the best marks of all time. Who cares if I wasn't alive at the time, it's still a Carlton mark, and it's stil the best captured on TV I reckon. Mind Shaun Smith's is pretty close, and gets bonus points for the lady in the crowd who's camera flash went off right at the perfect moment. Great television.

Then Buzz.

Then SOS.

Then Skinny.

Anyway on the topic - If Walker had of taken that screamer on debut it would of made his game 10x better but still a awesome debut! Lappins was awesome it is probably the best carlton mark i have seen in my lifetime.

jezza's marks - sublime
tiger's marks - freakish
southby's marks - rock solid
swan's marks - soaring
harmesy's marks - dynamic
peter mcconville marks - under rated
kenny hunter's marks - stupid
sos's marks - death defying
adrian hickmotts marks - gutsy

 but i figure better than any mark from the above were the 356 games worth of spoils on the best opposition FF and CHF's - Brucey Doull take a bow
....i tell you what he was one man who could make it bloody difficult for Royce to take a grab

p.s ragsy gould wasn't a bad flyer for the pill either

I remember Cook taking a ripper in a night game - I think against the Roos - probably the only decent thing he did on the footy field.

But for mine, Sos's mark was the best.

From memory I think he actually took two very good marks that night.

That was about it though.

Another mark i saw live was not of a carlton match but stood out to me. It was about 1991 and warrick Capper had returned to the swans that year and the diesel was playing for the swans still and capper took one of his trademark hangers over micky martyn, why this stands out other than the match was the southern stand not being there because it was being redone and how i saw 50 goals kicked for the day in the first half sydney were in control with iesel running rampant had about 25 possies up to half time and capper was slaying them, North were kicking goals aswell, but the 2nd half they got on top and won by about 3 goals, but North switched Jeff Chandler onto Diesel and tagged him brilliantly and thus the reason the swans losing. But 50 goals in a match was phenominal, cant remeber the exact score but it was 24 goals to 20

sos running with the flight of the ball against WCE, from full forward, diving into the ground to take the mark. think he kicked 5-6 that game, killing one fraser gehrig in the process.

Is that the one where he kneed himself in the head and had to go off concussed? If so, he kicked 7 from memory... Guts! He was a gutsy player our SOS... Loved him...

That was a great running, diving, head-pounding mark. I think your memory is right about going off, not sure he kicked 7, but what a dive. I loved Sos as a forward.

For me, Sos's big one against the Pies will always be a favourite.

There was a single year draftee David Nicholson who took heaps of big marks int he reserves in the early 1990's (jarusa - can you help out?). Pity he couldnt do anything else though.
