I am confused about this Thomas thing.
How do you save the big bucks when there is an amount you must pay each year?
Are we paying the full salary cap?
How much cash could we really save?
Would we have to be paying others overs?
How much would you pay Thomas in an ideal world?

The AFL cap is around $9,880,000 mill (rises 4.5% next 2 year) with a minimum of 95% needing to be paid out ($9,398,500)

So you could save close to $500k/year...

thomas salary - 600k
first year player for 2014 - 63k (2nd round pick) from betts compo) + match payments ($3400) + bonuses for playing games (3.2-9.5k)

Assuming the 2nd round pick doesn't play any games, we'd be paying around 40k to other players - not a huge amount...

How much would I pay thomas? - Where do you see the list? If I thought we were rebuilding then I certainly wouldn't have picked him up...

Once again the Thomas Crap. Thomas is a genuine midfielder. It cost salary cap. We took the injury risk. It may not have worked but do you include Everett, Wood, Docherty in your post? Last year was the closest we have come to decent recruiting in 10 years and you focus on the negative because of a personal bias against the coach

Again it comes down to the direction of the club - at the start of 2014 were we contending now? or rebuilding to do so in 2-3 years? - answer the question.

everitt -> recruited as a 24/25yo with NO injury issues - no issue there
docherty -> recruited as a 20 yo with no injury issues - no issue there
wood -> mature age rookie pick given that we've 2 injury prone ruck men - no issue there

A 26yo Thomas (now 27) - A genuine midfielder that had played a handful of games over 2 years and nowhere near his best and doubts about his ability to get back to his best - no issue IF the coach thought we were contending (in which case, malthouse has under performed this year) - massive issues if we came into 2014 expecting that we were 2-3 years away from contending (by which time thomas would be 29+)

Bias against the coach? give me a break - I said last year that malthouse should have our full support initially and be judged on year 2-3 rather than year 1 due to the need to implement a new game plan/strategy/approach.

So how about you answer some questions - Were we rebuilding or contending? IF we were rebuilding, when do you expect us to be ready to contend?

If we needed to rebuild, why would a 29yo thomas be a better option in 2-3 years time than a 20-21 yo 2nd round draftee?

Except for Essendon* and swans we have given every team in the 8 a run for their money. We are not that far away.

Change came a few weeks back

Given the diabolical state of our list, games like tonight along with the Geelong, Norf, Hawthorn games etc - show he can still coach.

Why is it that when we play poorly the list is diabolical yet and when we play well its all his coaching?

I put it to you that the list isn't as bad as many have made it out this year (hence the high risk recruitment of thomas) and that it is the underperformance of the coach that has made the list look bad.

Our group is at 11 o'clock.

Our group at 11 o'clock is just not as good as other groups at the same time or earlier.

Everyone has a right to an opinion apparently. No matter how stupid it makes them look.

Yes all negative discussion of the coach should be banned. We are 14th and we might finish as high as 12th how could any real supporter question million dollar Mick and his future at the club.

Got to hand it to Subjudice since his talk to Mick about his demeanour and responses at press conferences Mick has changed immeasurably

Come on, we nearly pinched the game against freo , at home. Give them some credit. Also give mick some credit for not being happy after the match. Doesnt that tell us something about him? Ratts would have been jumping up and down spouting drivel .
Mick was clearly pissed at yet another close loss against top quality opposition. Thats how he wants the players to think about losing. He wants them to be filthy about it, not just shrugg their shoulders and say "honourable loss"
He is changing his tac. Early in the year he would have been far more encouraging about such a loss, now he is not. Perhaps he felt at the start of the year, the group needed confidence, and now he recognises that they need resolve more than confidence... That is what i feel he is trying hard to instil at the moment.
We have gone from going missing as a team for whole matches last year, to whole quarters earlier this year, to now going missing for short but crucial periods at the moment. Mick will want to very much build on that, and then use that as a launching point for next year. If we played as well as we have recently, at the start of the year we would have beaten richmond , melbourne and brisbane.
The last thing mick will want is for our efforts to fall off over the next 4 rounds, he will want us to build going into next season.
Gold coast . win
Cats close loss
Port close loss
Essendon* . Win
