From the few games I saw on TV I thought he played well. Did a good negating role on the opposition's dangerous small forward. From all the stuff I've read here can't remeber ever reading his oppnent beat him? I think I saw him play midfield once and when he was let loose he looked classy. At worse he should be a BP hopefully keeping the likes of Farmer and Milne queit.[/quote]

From what i have read he wasn't in anybody's top 30 yet we took with our first round,i must admit i am scared yet hopeful.

Matt Burgan had him going to us in his Phantom Draft last year.

PJ any one can shoot me down with fact's.

uuuuuummmmmm so get stuffed. :P

He has a bit of inside knowledge from the recruiters though and a week or so before the draft most mock drafts had Russell coming to us @ #9. Don't think this means Burgan necessarily rated Russell as the 9th best player.

Spot on. Egan = Dud

I think JR should be thrown the challenge next year by Pagan to step up and take the Houlihan role as the rebounding defender. The kids has amazing agility, speed and good foot skills 95% of the time. He will have another pre-season under his belt to bulk up.

I honestly believe that our current group of "young guns" i.e Simmo, Carrots, Waite, Fisher, Betts, Thornton and Walker will lead us out of the mire that we are currently.

You could add the likes of the O'hAilpins, Hartlett, Russell, Raso, Smith and Blackwell to that list, but so far we haven't seen enough of them to make a proper judgement.

PJ - you forgot Murphy!!

We agree on something else Mj...Egan is a dud and overated....flashy goalkicker in the Leon Davis mould but not much else and will have his days like Leon does but wont be a player they will build a team around.
Collingwood were keen on Russell and would have taken him ahead of Egan....its the upside of Russell which puts him ahead of Egan in my books....like Walker he has work to do on aspects of his game but it will be worth the wait and we have to be patient.....

You know what I think the problem is? I'll tell you what I think the problem is. Listen, it's all about the list sizes decreasing evermore. Because we have such short lists compared to 10 years ago, we're expecting everything from the kids within a couple of years. We can't keep them for 3-4 years before they start showing anything. It's too big a risk. But if we had a list of 45 plus rookies, we'd be able to wait on them because we'd have 5 or so more experienced bodies. Considering how our experienced bodies went this year, that might not be a good thing though. [/ramble]

Put is simply, I haven't seen Russell, but I hope he can make it.
