I remember going to games on ANZAC day in the 1980's against Essendon** at VFL park. It must have been when ANZAC day fell over the weekend, there were huge crowds. Not sure why we missed out, from memory Coll and Essendon** were scheduled to play on ANZAC day one year and Sheedy approached the RSL about making it about the soldiers. It went from there.
The AFL now say that it is tradition and will stay, tradition is now 19 years. Other clubs and supporters have been complaining for about 16 of those 19 years, not sure what the tradition was 16 years ago. These 2 clubs can sell 3 game memberships which include the ANZAC day match, something 16 other clubs cannot do.
So now we have the biggest cheats in the history of the AFL representing our competition on this special day.

i did the same as well. there seems to have been some re-writing of history here regarding the "traditional" ANZAC day match between Collingwood and Essendon*. and if i hear the word brave used once more today (regarding football) i'll do a Terry Wallace and spew up!!

Can't begrudge Ess and Coll. They made it their own and they deserve the riches.

The day is self perpetuating and guaranteed.

As an MCC member I usually drop into the G before the start of each season to buy a couple of visitor tickets for all Carlton games, just in case I need them for guests. For most games this is not necessary, as visitor tickets are usually available up to the start of each game. I just find it more convenient.

This year I went to the MCC in late Feb. There was already a sign up that said all visitor tickets were sold out for ANZAC day. Same as last year. It is by far the biggest ticketed home and away game for the year. It is a juggernaut that keeps rolling on and on.

Great game again today. Was barracking furiously for the PIES which I still find troubling. Great to see the drug cheats overrun.

The one thing I couldn't understand was why no Collingwood player gave Jobe Watson a firm whack to that egg on his right eyebrow at the start of the last quarter, after he went off at the end of the third with a nasty gash after a head clash with Harry O. It would have been so easy to open that cut again and have Watson off the ground for a substantial period in the last. Don't Collingwood have assistant coaches that give them strategic advice.

Anyway suffer in your jocks Essendon*.

So they own ANZAC day?

in a normal home and away round, if two clubs create a block buster each year purely because of their fans turning up good luck to them.

In the past there was only Essendon-Collingwood game on ANZAC day, so there were more viewers, listeners and fans turning up to the MCG.

The clubs do not OWN the ANZAC day game.

Its an important National day - lets see the grand finalists play off on ANZAC day in the first grand final replay of the season....

The best for the diggers, not drug cheats and a team that regularly loses grand finals in the modern era.

its simple really, force the clubs to donate 100% of the revenue earned from this game, then see if they are still keen to be the only onces playing the ANZAC day clash.

I think clubs would still line up to take part in the ANZAC day game. Its worth quite a bit in sponsorship and marketing of the clubs. memberships etc...

But youre right, money is a big factor in all of this...

Should have both Australian and New Zealand national anthems before the games.

Our administration fell asleep at the wheel on two big items:

1. Not moving to the MCG shortly after Essendon* did in the 1990's. Essendon* moved from Windy Hill and tripled their supporter base. We had some of the best turnstile clickers in the land in Kernahan, Silvagni, Williams, Hanna, Bradley, And & Kouta. So what did we do ... stay at pissy Optus Oval with our 30,000 attendances instead of going to the MCG and play in front of 50,000 plus each week. Eddie took advantage of our stupidity and snapped up the MCG and look where they are as a club.

2. ANZAC day

How anyone can attempt to make a logical argument that Coll and Ess should play on Anzac Day every year is beyond me. Why shouldn't other players be able to win an Anzac medal, hold up the Anzac Cup. This isn't the Tuddenham Coleman medal it's an ANZAC medal, it belongs to everyone,as does the day itself. The irony is restricting it to an exclusive club of two is completely the opposite of everything that the Anzac spirit stands for.

I only watched the Perth game. Was only one anthem sung, and it was by a group of teenagers singing Australia's.

Maybe they crossed back to Eddie during the NZ one.

Drug cheats should not be involved on this great day. I refused to watched, and went to the Anzac Day NRL game ( first time ever) Storm vs Warriors instead. It was awesome .

Side note -NRL is a simple straight forward game , where the coaches haven't [REDACTED] it up . Yet

Don't be a sheep.

In your own mind, you don't HAVE to associate ANZAC Day to AFL.

One occasion is VERY different to the other.

I can and it has. The introduction of the ANZAC Day clash has given it a deserved focus and made much more people aware of what it really stands for.

As someone who served in the 90's the change and attitude has changed dramatically over the past 10-20 years and the football focus has been a part of that and for the better IMO.

My awareness has been heightened by attending dawn services and visiting places like Al Alamein, Kokoda, etc. Not by watching footy.

If that were true it would confirm what a mindless, heraldsun culture exists in this country.

Mine as well BUT by having "events" celebrating ANZAC Day has definitely improved the awareness of ANZAC Day. To say otherwise is ignorance to what has happened. 20 years ago it was a small event, losing it's relevance especially compared to today.

I don't care how people discover or learn about ANZAC Day and gain an AWARENESS what it stands for. The great thing is they do and as a country we are becoming more united towards our Military and our history. Kids now have a greater understanding than ever before.

Nothing but positives IMO.
