Masterstroke from Mick today. Playing an undercooked Judd in order to ensure we got a brave win was awesome. He really had the boys united today.

Judd was influential in what way?

He was the reason we won, of course. What Heavs said.

Happy with the win, but let's see how we back up next week.

Consistent effort and pride in the jumper is what we need.

That's how you play a game of footy.

88 tackles today against the doggies...

From memory the Blues have only laid more tackles in a game on 2 occasions, both of which slightly higher at 90 tackles. (2011?)

The tackling count is a good indicator of player intensity, team pressure and concentration, workrate etc.

Especially in a game where the possession tally is about even for each team.

Won the contested ball today as well (with about 150 contested ball wins)

If you look at the previous 4 weeks, we have been very poor in these basic areas - with the exception of perhaps 2 quarters against the Port Power in the opening round and a quarter against the tigers.

Even if the blues had lost today, they would have at least been able to tick the workrate, 1%ers and contested ball boxes....no excuse for not being able to get the basics right in a football match. I think this is the main reason members have been angry at the team/club/coach etc in the opening month of football - and rightly so.

Yes. As I posted earlier, a lot of his stuff tonight won't appear on the stats sheet.

He was huge in that last quarter. The only one still going, still laying tackles.

A rhino he was.
He will play a lot of good footy for us and we shouldn't expect he will ever get Brownlow votes.
If you attack the ball and man as hard as he does you will always make mistakes like leaving the footy behind or having your momentum carry you into the tackle but if it's intensity we need, and it is, he provides it in spades.

I thought moving Scotland forward at the end was a masterstroke by Mick.

Warnock was great and the run of Tommy Bell was phenomenal. There was a real physical edge to our game and I don't understand how that sort of thing can be there one week but lacking in previous matches.

I'm really excited about Cripps. I think he will be a quick learner and will be running the show for us by the end of the season. I loved at the end of the second quarter that he had a bit of confidence to go in and give that cauliflower Crameri a bit of a shove when he was being a dick.

What's with cripps mispronunciation in this thread?

I watched a little bit of the replay last night, Sandy Roberts commentating instantly brought back memories of the 1995 Grand Final.

Did he call every Carlton player "Simpson" in 1995 too?

I heard at 8 o'clock last night, Bell was still running around Etihad tackling the ground crew.

Have only watched the last quarter on TV, but two things stood out...

1. Ferocious tackling (= turnovers)
2. Straight kicking (= goals)

Straight kicking alone would most likely have us at 3-2. Put the two together each week and watch the wins come rolling in.

And why Bell was previously dropped has me [REDACTED]. He's a goer and a ferocious tackler.

Yeah Effes, get a life.
No one wants to hear your logic or facts. Its easier to moronically call the players softcocks and weak with nothing to back it up whatsoever. :donk:

FWIW, I was rapt to see the boys have a win and obviously enjoying their footy.

Players playing with freedom. Plenty of run and receive. Maintaining possession and puttiing the ball into the hands of the quality ball users.
How often did we bring the ball into the corridor with a 45 degree chip kick to put someone in space? Scotland alone did it 2 or 3 times. It allowed us to attack the forward 50 through the corridor which resulted in more shots from in front. It also made us harder to play against. A zone is far more effective when you can condense it into one area of the ground. Yesterday we used the total width of the ground to transition the ball, and with speed. The fast ball movement didnt allow the opposition to flood back which resulted in more one on ones for our forwards. More one on one contests resulted in more space in the corridor to lead to.
Great to see Gibbs getting plenty of handball receives and using the ball with purpose.
Credit to Malthouse. His ego may not allow him to admit it but the boys played a more attacking game style which is far more suitable to our personnel.
And credit to the players. after all the shit they've copped, there werent too many passengers out there yesterday. Its like the Saints on Saturday. If you give the players a game style they believe in, effort can overcome deficiencies. The win was nice but I was more pleased to see the way we played the game.
Well done to Malthouse and the football department. Lets hope they can keep progressing from here.

We had 1000 shots before the game, nobody kicked a goal either. Always a good sign that :-)

As much as I like the young players of the Doggies midfield I was very pleased to see Wallis both a) carved up and b) called out for scragging without the ball. For a young player he is resorting to holding on a la Gayfer way too much.

Yeah and possibly would have lost today as a result. We needed to make a stand buy dropping senior players that weren't prepared to put in 100%.

thing I liked about the last qtr, the only bit that I saw, at the end of the game, there were no bullshit celebrations. it was as if they had just done what was expected, not won the gf like they once would have celebrated, or how Melbourne celebrated.

it really looked by their body language that they had more to do to earn back some respect, and this win was hard fought, deserved, now lets move on to the next challenge

nice work boys
