Our latest recruit, Cripps is playing his first game for the club...

He is finding the pace of the game challenging, but doing what he can.

At a critical moment in the game, Cripps marks 40 metres out from goal on an angle.

This will be his third kick in AFL football.

NOBODY stands next to him to encourage and support, to suggest he relaxes and just kick it through like any other kick, to suggest he aims for the right post and allow for the breeze to take it through....

He stands alone on the 50 metre line and lines up the goal...no player of either team are within earshot.

Cripps overkicks and the ball goes through for a behind.

NOBODY comes to him to pat him on the back, to tell him it's OK and to keep trying.

Leadership is more that tossing the coin at the start of the match. Leadership is more than sitting next to Mick at a press conference. Leadership is more than being paid the most at a club. Leadership is more than leading the team off the ground at the end of the day...

Kernahan, Maclure, Jezza, Braddles, Johnno would have be standing by to look after the future of Cripps and shown REAL LEADERSHIP despite what the final score was.

Excellent point made Willie, and sadly these examples are far too common. The general theme in the playing group of introversion and introspection might come from noble and reasonable beginnings, but that players do not look past their own problems after a few years at the club and look to lift and rally their team mates through communication and encouragement is utterly mortifying, not to mention completely selfish.

They may not even see themselves as selfish, and that's something that they almost need slapped out of them.

Well spotted, sadly we could probably find a dozen similar examples from any match in the last few years.

Absolutely agree with the embarrassing lack of leadership . I almost put my own hand through my TV screen last week to help and support young Buckley who was left to fend for himself when being bullied around by Goddard and co with not one Carlton player showing some respect for his teammate or the jumper there wearing to step in and show some for lack of a better word balls!!!!!!! I was frothing couldn't believe the weak pricks !!!!!!! Stopped watching I knew we were going to lose the game but to lose our integrity and respect for our club was to much to handle
THEY NEED TO HARDEN UP AND FAST
I'm not angry I'm past that IM EMBARRASSED !!!!!

Three weeks ago I was disgusted with Murph's game against Richmond. It was not that as a footballer per se it was bad, but as our captain, it was atrocious. If your captain seeks shortcuts in this game, how can you expect everyone to do the right things?

Lets face it our players are nice guys.

We will not offend the opposition by sticking up for our team mates and should an opposition player make a serious stuff up we will not let them know.

It's ok for our captain to be thrown around like a rag doll or for our youngsters to be pushed and shoved around after all we do not want to start any trouble.

We are nice guys.

Leadership at Carlton means being the first one down to the hairdresser.
