Haven't visited this site as much as I have in the past because of the sanitised nature of it.

Bottom line is a lot of these blinkered supporters who think last season was a success because we fell into the finals because one team took drugs and Andy and his cohorts had to be seen to do something and another team had an extrodinary year of close losses(North) then beat the Tiggies who lets be honest crap their dacks are full of delusion.

They reckon because we beat Richmond in front of 95000 its 1972 all over again. Thats how some who visit this site still think.

Assuming a couple of the teams that made the eight miss out there is
North
Doggies
West Coast
Adelaide
Gold Coast
Essendon*
who are likely to challenge for a finals spot


The so called guns should be at their peak. I am talking about Murphy, Gibbs, Kreuzer
Judd is passed his best
As I said before in the wash up a stupid trade
Judd is likely to retire this year

This pathetic Board promises us the world yet the team delivers @#$%&! all in the scheme of things.


What flower excuse will they come up with this if we dont make the eight

And if that happens check out the pearls of wisdom that True Blue Brad, King Kerna and of course my mate the Cazzeman will trott out on this website.

Our recruiting has been ordinary
We have paid out the contracts on our last 3 coaches who for various reasons were not up to it but the board was ultimately responsible for employing them then giving them the lemon and sarse but they still want our money as supporters. Doesnt make much sense to me.

We now have MM who obviously was passed his used by date according to Eddie yet we pay him one mill a year while over at the Kennel and down at Port Macca and Hinkley are achieving similiar results at under half that price.

The days of big money being paid to someone guarentees success are over. But that is not the way they think down at Royal Parade

And we all wonder how such a so called power club can barely make a profit and struggle to reach 50000 members


As I said and will continue to say the problem lies with this board and the flower who have resided on it for way , way too long bringing with it a culture that is old, stale and way out of date

Is it sanitized or just a little less polluted?

Not sure what people expect by continually bemoaning "the good old days"? They're done. They're over. It's an 18 team comp and it won't get any easier.
If all that matters is a Premiership, then there will be many more downs than ups. There's no getting away from that for any team.

We'll need plenty to go right to make top 4 but then again that goes for most teams.
Even Hawthorn won't have everything their own way this year.

I think this year is a fork in the road for us.

First season Mick has been able to shape the list in a meaningful way - although there's still a significant amount of list mismanagement to be worked through this October. And even October 2015 with the likes of Bootsma having two years to run on a contract.

First preseason where Mick can work on a game plan understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the playing list

A number of recent recruits are playing for their careers. Bootsma, Watson, Lucas, Buckley, etc.

If the team can build on the more consistent competitiveness Mick instilled last year and translate that into wins, I think there is enough of a core to have a few cracks at reaching prelim finals over the next 2-3 years. Even without Judd if this his last year.

If the team goes backwards this year, then the case for a rebuild will be very powerful. Is that something Mick is up for?

I'm not sure if any club is at a more delicate juncture than Carlton this year. Most other clubs have an arrow very clearly pointing in one direction. There are compelling arguments for Carlton moving either up or down this season.

sure things are looking tough for us........

but then again......what were we thinking 8 weeks ago about our chances of winning the ashes series 5 nil?

who knows in a game of sport? sure we dont look the goods, but there have been as many surprise winners in sport as there have been 'certainties'!

i dont know why you would bother following any team or sport without a 'half glass full approach'..........its the nature of the beast.

I agree with some of what you say and disagree with some.

I disagree with the notion that Malthouse is a has been old coach who shouldn't have been gotten... I think he's better than that. I think he's better than the whole Denis Pagan thing. I think he's better than Ratten. I hope he proves it.

I agree that it looks as though we could be in for a torrid year. As you mentioned Judd is done, although he's still better than a sizeable portion of our list even at his retirement age.

I agree that it appears that the recruitment has been shizen housen... I'd argue that it's less the recruitment and more the development... or maybe it's about the attitude of the individual... I believe the results we tend to get are largely as a result of the way in which the goal was attempted.

The trio of Kreuzer, Gibbs and Murphy haven't set alight the competition as we all thought they would when they were put together, but they're still in a position to do this as they are in or about to be in the prime of their career. Murphy with 2 injured seasons and Kreuzer who seems as though he will never achieve his potential due to ongoing injury management... there's plenty of reasons to be pessimistic.

The supporting cast has done it's job okay in my view. At times they look like world beaters, only to be frustrated by a lack of consistency to always perform at a high level. In 2013 we lacked the killer punch. Against Essendon*, Collingwood, Richmond, St Kilda and Hawthorn the team had enough opportunity to establish a significant lead - certainly enough to win the game - and blew it. That says to me that with a similar (and arguably improved) list and an ability to put scoreboard pressure in on dominant windows of the game, Carlton should actually improve.

I think we're still a mid table club. We could finish as high as 6th and as low as 12th depending on how much improvement actually occurs. Should we get good service out of recruits Thomas and Everitt, the higher end of the ladder looks okay.

If I had to put money on it, I'd put it on missing the finals. Not enough confidence in the team.

My view is that malthouse has to come up with a diff game plan. Even the commentators know mick game style.

Yep.

Terrible, terrible drafting and list management. This will no be a Geelong style period of prolonged competitiveness. If it does go pear shaped I hope management has the stones to blow it up and not delay the inevitable .

17 including the rookie list, 13 from the senior list. By comparison Geelong have 23 senior listed players in that age bracket.

Comparing our aging list to the three clubs that have been power houses over recent times it isn't all that doom and gloom.

Carlton have 5 players aged 29 or older at round 1 - average games played 211

Geelong have 9 players aged 29 or older at round 1 - average games played 190

Hawthorn have 7 players aged 29 or older at round 1 - average games played 210

Sydney have 8 players aged 29 or older at round 1 - average games played 203

Just comparing ourselves to Geelong I reckon the Cats are going to have one last crack in 2014 before taping off quickly and a few injuries and they could have an abysmal season. Geelong certainly look the worst placed for an exodus of experience in the short term, whilst they certainly currently have a slightly younger list overall the average games played amongst their players aged less that 29 yo at the start of the year is only 34 games where as our players less than 29 now average 63 games.

Don't know entirely, but Geelongs list balance looks significantly out of whack. Large group at top and bottom end.
