Loved his attitude and in his 43 games made some very solid contributions to the club. For a defender, his 4 goals to sink the Tigers in a final & 3 goals against the pies the previous season were match winning performances.

Contracted for this year, the suggestion is he may be placed on the LTI list to allow a rookie upgrade.

The Age suggests he came back in poor shape partly because of the degenerative knee but also partly because he'd realised there was no prospect of overcoming it.

I certainly hope that the situation only became certain after it was too late to drop him off the list and open up another spot, I'd feel it pretty shabby treatment of the club otherwise. Maybe they were giving him every chance, or maybe the need to pay out the contract meant there wasn't salary cap room to replace him anyway.

I certainly hope he cannot be criticised for the timing of his departure, despite his fall from favour under Malthouse he was a leader around the club, a great story coming from a state league at his age and by all accounts an admirable man on and off the field.

Someone was talking about bringing forward payments into 2014 to free space in 2015.

..have always been a big fan of the Doogs.. ..liked him for more of his off-field work, good man.. ..on field, he played like a leader, although at times his ability might not have been up to what his will wanted to produce.. ..but that 2011 season and his match winning performances in 2012 late in season and in that elim final are moments that we can all remember and rejoice in..

..if he stays in melbourne [not even sure if he will stay in australia or take up his work overseas like he once intended to], i would like to see if there is an opportunity for him to continue on at the club in some capacity.. ..i think he could be very good for us in some kind of development role, either on field or more importantly in a helpful role for our players in their off field endeavours..

I was assuming that he would not remain on the list and that we'd be able to use his salary allowance to improve our ongoing TPP scenario. Sounds like we can't do that, as lists are finalised - is that right?

Can't agree. How well have we done in that period? What has he really done?

Mature players should be picked when you are ready to challenge and then done so through the rookie draft.

Would much rather used those picks on kids.

How the hell did a fringe player get a contract for 2014 anyway?

It's actually something the AFL should look at. If a player retires during the pre season the club should be able to replace them. Lists are so tight now and depth so important and it gives another player a chance to play AFL.

Stop being so bloody negative all the time. I think we all agree the club has many areas of improvement it needs to address and criticism is welcomed, but the constant unwarranted shit canning gets bloody tiring after a while.

Duigan was taken at pick #70 after kids had been selected (McCarthy #34, Mitchell #42, McInnes #67). It's not like the Sam Rowe selection where it could be argued we could have got him with a lesser selection. Duigs was our last draft choice before our promoted rookies and played more games than the three kids taken ahead of him combined.

I think the AFL would (rightly IMO) tell the club that it's their problem they can't organise their lists properly.

No doubt we did well with Duigan selection in draft - his second last game let alone 42 others and in particular 2011 performances meant that he was a good choice at the time - good bloke smart and obviously a leader

Having said that disappointed after what I consider one of our better trade/draft pre-seasons in a few years we didn't sort this out with the player before lists are closed off and we go into season one short -it smacks of same approach as giving davies /joseph more than one year contracts - get it right
