Spot on DS

I'd rather we put 22 games into Menzel next year rather than someone that won't be around all that long.

We should be able to do both

In 2011 Ratten declared we needed a "blue chip forward"
Have we made any genuine attempt other than Cloke?

Dude I know you've only been here since August but you should know by now that if Ratten said it then it was wrong. Only Mick speaks the truth.

Not many blue chip forwards.
If podsy was available I'd take him to band aid us.

Ratten chased Pavlich. Malthouse chased Cloke. Time to develop one of our own. Recruiting them is the easy bit.

..bingo..

..helps if we don't pass them and/or trade them away..

..with what's out there in trade land and draft land, I'd be working watto extra hard sprint training and boxing and look to play hendo fwd, that goes a long way, ppl may scoff but I reckon hendo could be better than cloke..

Ironic that the pick we gave Geelong for Mick Mansfield they used on an 18 yr old Chappy. We prefer our Geelong recruits to be injury prone and past their best. You'd only go for him if he is going to be part of the 2014 premiership, and we have 8 sides from last year ahead of us and a few behind us breathing down our necks. We need significant improvement rather than some icing.

I agree- it is ironic and painful that that pick got them Chapman. The Mick Mansfield situation was a huge mistake, so from a Carlton perspective it makes one wary of obtaining/trading in Geelong players.

The difference is that Mansfield was a pretty good player-whilst Chapman is a champion of the game. He is above nearly all other players in terms of what he is capable of in finals. He demonstrated it in the match against Port a few weeks back when he kicked 4 goals. They only won by 16 points and the next best goal kicker for Geelong was Hawkins - 2 goals.

I have no doubt in my mind that Geelong would have made the grand final this year if Chapman hadn't been suspended. He is that much better than any other small forward in the game (even if half injured). BTW - Chapman shouldn't have been suspended and the suspension of players for harmless bumps is a blight on the game...

History has been decided though and Hawthorn are premiers...how things could have been different. I am not sure how good he is going forward- but purely on his record to date - few can even get close to Chapman. If picking a team from 2002-onwards - he would be about the first I would pick.

Then again, maybe he wouldn't like playing for the Blues, and would be more suited to a team with a proven record of finals success...Hawthorn or Sydney (neither of which would take him for financial reasons?).....who really knows...all I know is when I think of a footballing champion - I think of Chapman. History will judge him well- I hope.

Can casboult -- or anyone else on the roster for that matter -- be developed into what we need?

What about buying a blue chip fullback/ chb and developing Henderson forward?

imo our defense is shaky. Once Jamison goes down, we lack any man-to-man type to take their best forward.

Not sure if anyone's raised this.

Bit of a fire sale ... And chappy is confirmed as a guy we apparently want.

I'd be very surprised if we've actively shopped Bootsma around, given that he just signed for two years.
Casboult might feel like he needs a change of scene and Lucas' value is as high as it ever has been.

Mind you, it might be that we have said, 'Yes, these players are available - here is the price' (the price being something almost too high to justify) just to see the lay of the land. I suspect we have a similar attitude regarding Yarran.

Currency. If anyone wants him, they'll have to pay, and if they don't, he stays. An out of contract Boots wouldn't be worth a lot.

Good to see that after years of holding on to middle-tier players with doubtful improvement that we're being bold and ruthless.

(assuming this is true of course)

This 10 game contract idea that was supposedly raised by Geelong. Makes no sense really (lets say you have a spate of injuries midyear and Chapman's played his ten for the year and "retired"...talk about holding you over a barrel). Guess they think he had some value in him, but not at the coin he was requesting.

If we see him as someone who can become our designated super-sub, whilst I see merit in it from an on-field perspective, paying overs for a bloke to fit a role specially designed to play <30 minutes most games is stupid from a list management perspective, and possibly even damaging long term rather than using it as Mick did at Collingwood, with blooding younger players into the team.

We lack clutch players (our two close wins saw other teams essentially beat themselves in the dying seconds), and we lack players with the physical presence to stand up to teams like Hawthorn and Sydney. Perhaps the greater merits of the trade are found in someone who can be a physical presence and help someone like Murphy break a tag. On the other, we still lack midfield accountability, and have more than our fair share of older players who struggle to get on the park.

Can we afford Chapman's asking price? Seems a few clubs have baulked at him already. On the other, we're addressing a couple of needs without having to give away a pick of any nature in a shallow draft.

I'd prefer him over Sewell. Cross is probably a cheaper option though.

I could easily live without any of the players mentioned in that article.

We are addressing the midfield via draft and will load up on talks in the draft
