Sounds like there could be a bit of movement out of the Club...

Quote:
Speaking at Etihad Stadium on the first day of the trade period, McKay confirmed Shaun Hampson could be on the move, with Richmond and potentially Hawthorn interested in the ruck-forward.

"We have a number of people who will be up for grabs," McKay said.
"It's a terrible time of year for individuals like that.

"We have a number of people who clubs have shown an interest in and so it will just depend on what interest we have."

What to read into the Shaw "no comment"?

3.30pm: Carlton update.

Football manager Andrew McKay says paperwork will be lodged for Shaun Hampson to Richmond for the Tigers' second round pick in the next few hours.

Deal is all but done. Thanked Hampson for his contributions to the club.

The Blues will also put in the paperwork for Dale Thomas by the end of today.

Didn't shut the door on Heath Shaw but ruled out Alan Didak as an option.

Said the Blues would be silly not to explore recruiting Paul Chapman.

Probably that we're/he's interested and that Collingwood won't trade with us.

I reckon we have done well with the Hammo deal, used about pick 20 to get him and got pick 28. I am not sure if it is a great decision by either the Tiges or Hammo tho. He needs to be at a club where he gets a shot as the number one ruckman. Playing back up to Maric will mean he again becomes a second rate fwd. He should have been looking at a side with either ageing or no #1 ruck - Perhaps Melbourne or Geelong. Anyway, I think Warnock is absolutely tradeable too, if Big K is fit Warnock will continue his career as the best paid player in the VFL. Neither he or big K are effective fwds and can only play ruck, so one of them won't be in the side.

We could have had him 14 years ago with Pick 31 - that we gave to Geelong for Michael Mansfield in the 1999 Draft. Great player but way too late, will be really P155ed if we do this.

Carlton corp needs to get serious about the new landscape. Over a ten year period, any side would be doing well to win one or two flags. That means you need the list to be a serious contender for 3 consecutive years, the other 7 don't matter they are just opportunities to spread salary cap payments.

Take money away from development and concentrate it only on selective high end talent, we can rely on other sides to develop players we can then get by trading or FA. Trade/unload anyone who is not going to be there in the 3 year window. The side that trades best and manipulates contracts best wins. So you have your core 10 players who can contribute to a flag in the 3 year window and then you cherry pick Free Agents for the window. Put them on long term deals to spread payments. When the three year window passes (hopefully with a flag or two, otherwise the corporation has failed) trade on players who won't be there for the next window (which is most of the list). Our salary spread means we will have committments towards our next decade window but if we on trade players and only have to take up part of there salary we can manage our salary cap, while finishing down the bottom, and bringing in young players who will be part of next window or traded when it suits us.

It is all about flags and Free Agency means you don't have to develop a list. You selectively develop high end talent and then buy in the rest for a smash and grab and then go down the bottom again, pick up tradeable picks or build up low cost talent and over the ten year plan all the salary cap spread will be acquitted and we start again. 7 years near the bottom and three years as genuine contenders, over and over again.

And maybe our high end talent moves on to another team so they win a flag as we dissipate the list to acquit our long contracts. Win two flags in ten years - the corporation is successful - win none and the corp fails. And the really good players might get to play in multiple premierships for various clubs, that's sure to give all die hards great satisfaction. Imagine if we were able to say Bruce Doull was a 4 time premiership player, one with us one with the Hawks, one with the Tiges and one with the Dons, how revered a player would he be then! Wouldn't it be great to share our greats with all those hated rivals so we all win flags with the same players.

The Swans are ahead of the game with the Buddy deal, multiply that strategy by 50 and that will be th AFL in the future.

I would have liked to have got more than pick 28 for him...as he is an experienced ruckman. We have done the work on him to develop his game - maybe two picks from Richmond is fairer.

What happens if Warnock or Kreuzer is injured ?

Do we rely on Casboult in the ruck?

Surely there is a better option than Casboult?

reckon it's best to assess the list structure after the trade period - got a feeling there's much more change to happen

With the sarcasm noted, I've been thinking like that for years. Where does the sense of identity rest? For instance, Judd was a champion who helped win a premiership for West Coast, he didn't need Carlton. At least Greg Williams needed us to gain him a premiership. There's no symbolism involved in the whole 'poaching' exorcise and often its effectiveness is questionable. If you need to trade for other club's players, get the ones who are hungry and have something to prove, not the ones who are already sated.
