Synbad what the hell is your position here? You bag Ratts for being crap, then it seems like you're happy with Malthouse but then bag him for sticking around and playing the long game like it's some tactic to stay employed. Do you rate him or not? Your stance is contradictory. If he's good he'll get the job done ASAP, but you're implying now he's gonna play it out to keep himself in a job as long as possible.

Which is it? MM is good or MM is bad? We know what you think of Ratts.

Yeah, it's sounds self-mocking ('self' being 'Carlton') but complacent at the same time and we all know Synbad doesn't do complacent. All this "close" business is strange, too, and close is not good enough.

because we dont even do close... close will keep mick running the club... because we would be rapt to be close... thereabouts
thats micks forte.. getting teams thereabouts.. sometimes without winning things

but because thereabouts is so far from where weve been... wed take that!!

the other thing we dont do.. is independent reviews of the whole footy club from top to bottom....

so if the club has no idea.. and they dont!!!.. cos its the same people for a long long time.. and if their history of decision making is shithouse..and theyre not up to the standard (Think Davies) Malthouse to this club is a Gods send..
Without a full review.. (were not having one) there is no way theyre going to let go of the edge of the swimmingpool ... its safer than where they have been before.. 3 foot of water and almost drowned.

Mick is surrounding the club with what he wants... is this his fault??Nooooooooooo of course not!!!! The club out of ideas.. headhunted him for exactly this.......
He did not come on his own.... he didnt hire himself.. he was headhunted... for his skills...!!!... Theyre not going to want to change him..... that wouldnt look good.... and they wouldnt know what to change him with anyway... they have to go along with the MM roll of the dice.

Hes staying..!!!

Bluewave can want him sacked as much as he wants....not going to happen...!!!

Hes here for as long as he likes !!!

Now also tell us how youre taking the Mickey out of BlueWave. cos he thinks were going to sack him.

Mick is here for as long as he likes....

Peeps need to get used to it..!!!

Bluewave and a few others don't like Micks coaching. I think he is an ok coach even though he was schooled by Horse, had a shocking year and his gameplan looks dated.

I just dont like Mick that is why i want him gone. Mick at Carlton just doesnt sit well with me.

I am starting to get use to him being there now and ranting on about him being sakced is how i am dealing with the pain.

This proves the point. You judge the coach on whether you like him personally. Don't worry about that, it is whether he can coach and MM can. Previous coaches were lovely people who were poor coaches

I accept what you are saying apart from the 'proves a point ' bit because there never was such a point to be proven.

Everyone is going past us? We finished sixth. Only five in front of us and a heap behind us.

I dont buy any of this dogmatic stuff synbad. You dont know , as much as any of us dont know...
For all you know we could ace this trade period, and with some further MM development of our list we could be top 4 next year. Once you are there you just need a little luck...
On the other hand we arent operating in a vacuum. It seems that nearly every team next year has claims to being able to vie for finals. I dont expect it from the demons but you never know with roos... Now maths tells me that 18 into 8 just doesn't go. There are going to be 10 teams that dont make it probably 8 that will feel that they were unluckily close. We could be easily one of those sides.

If we had luck and some more experience playing together the mm way, we could have easily won another 5 games, with our existing side this season.
Our midfield depth needs bolstering as injuries to carrazo, mclean, judd, murphy betts, exposed our lack of run at crucial times. Adding Daisy and one other top mid ( definitely a possibility) gives us this depth and the trickle down effect to all the other mids means they all become more effective.

Our midfield "recruits" for 2014

1 carazzo he was one of our most important players , this year injuries have seen his influence wane. But he still will be a very important addition.
2 judd . Age and injuries are catching up , but to suggest that he is finished or to use a cool buzz word "cooked" is just plain overstating it. He is still a valuable member of any team.
3 murphy. Injuries and a lack of pre season has reduced his season to average. Those that say he cant handle a tag will be red faced next year.
4 gibbs. Finally a coach who gets it. Gibbs needs to play in the midfield. He will be a valuable addition next year.
5 daisy. Speculation still, but obviously worthy. Adds lots of run , goal kicker , skills.
6 mystery mid. Whether from the draft or FA (selwood, staker?)

Others
1 walker. Could his role down back be taken by a newly accountable yarran? If so walkers fitness experience size could be a great addition.
2 robinson. Been labeled a dumb footballer. Not without basis. But its his awareness and the fact that he attacks the ball so vigourously that has lead to this. Experience builds awareness. With another pre season, and proper redefining his role could help this problem immensely.
3 tuohy, improving in leaps and bounds. His run and carry plus great kicking off half back would be sorely missed, but perhaps a midfield role is beckoning? He would certainly add grunt and strength at the contest. Maybe MM has been waiting for his fitness to get to the next level.
4 duigan?? Gives strength at the contest. Could he be sharpened into an extractor role? Fitness? Obviously has the mental strength to improve. MM likes players in his mold.
5 lucas. Shows great promise in patches. Too light, needs to bulk up and improve fitness. Knows how to find the ball, but has lapses in disposal. Like robinson, this could improve dramatically off season and with more experience.
6 bell. Definitely one of MM favourites. Agility is a worry, a straight line player, but his key weakness is fitness. This can be addressed easily with another preseason. His positives give him massive upside.
7 buckley. MM seems to have shown faith in not delisting him. His size is a worry but mick sees something
8 menzel. Will be a beauty. Desperately needs strength and fitness, but has the skills.
9 graham . Too light , small atm but can find the footy and already has elite fitness. Needs to add kg.

Looking at the group as a whole, i see much more upside than downside for next year. Player development/recovery should offset any declines . But as can be seen even judd and carazzo have improvement over this years output.

I feel that mick inherited a lot of " generalist" midfielders this year, that didnt excell in anything. I expect our midfield will be sharpened into roles by MM-
Extractors
Blockers
Outside Runners
Line breakers
Goal kickers
Break away runners.

Oh yeahhhhhhhh carrazzo ..!!!.. why didnt i think of carrazzo... let me guess.... to get fitter than he has over the last 2 years and to tag???...

and judd eh??.... what do u expect from judd... 1 tackle between him and murphy in a semi final kind of game??

Listen.. i know youll bring up i njuries.. but everyone is injured and carrying something this time of the year...

but over the last 2 years juddy has been living in the shadows of jude bolton for performance and jude is older with more injuries and retired...
juddy doesnt run both ways injury or no injury

murphy cant survive as the number one mid.. he needs a dangerfield type to take the pressure of him (ironic)
he will be smashed and tagged as well as scragged everytime he waks out into the middle.. he will be run back into our defensive 50 .... thats what he will have to work through.

he cant do it...!!!

hes better off at another club and were better off without him depending on what someone is prepared to offer us.

he has painted himself into a corner... he has put on the great big bullseye.. and he wont cope!!

he remids me of a nick dal santo kind of player
very skillful .. but needs other A grade mids around him because he isnt a front liner..

Didn't he take the pies from bottom half of the table to 2 grand finals in the first 3years??

Brisbane were a pretty fair footy team in that era. Don't think many would have beaten them in those grand finals. Mind you I was barracking very hard for them to win.

..yes, lost them both.. ..with very ordinary team that [team on paper] should never have beaten the better teams to even reach the granny.. ..and lost to a champion team both times sure, mind you.. ..the first loss they were very close and could have nearly won it, aside from some last quarter team lifting/saving play from voss and co.

How many Grand Finals did we lose in the time MM was coaching Collingwood between 2000 and 2011? How many coaches did we have in that period of time?

Let's compare his record with that of Thompson ( who we all laud as a successful coach)
between 2000 and 2010

Thompson 3 Grand Finals, 2 premierships, took 8 years to get Geelong into a GF ( could have easily had one premiership, close result against St Kilda)

Malthouse 3 Grand Finals , 1 premiership, took 3 years to take a wooden spoon winning team to a GF ( could have easily had two premierships but for a close result against Brisbane)

Not much difference is there? Except that by the time he got Geelong into a GF Thompson had charge of a much more talented team than Malthouse managed to get into the 2002 GF.

It's all good for anyone to dislike Malthouse, that's your right, but to paint him as unsuccessful in his period of tenure at Collingwood is just plain ridiculous.

As far as him retiring at the end of his contract goes i have the feeling he will be here for at least 5 years, they will give him an extension of two years at the end of next year unless things go disastrously bad.

Lets hope we get Thomas .. at least thats one constructive thing MM will have done this year after an incredibly second rate performance where a series of younger coaches outpointed him. Not to mention the gigantic stuff ups at the selection table and with player management.

If we do lose Betts, Robinson and Yarran, tricky Micky will have played a significant role in their downfall.

2 more years to go ... hopefully.

Didn't he take the pies from bottom half of the table to 2 grand finals in the first 3years??

And lost them both.

..yes, lost them both.. ..with very ordinary team that [team on paper] should never have beaten the better teams to even reach the granny.. ..and lost to a champion team both times sure, mind you.. ..the first loss they were very close and could have nearly won it, aside from some last quarter team lifting/saving play from voss and co.

Buckley dragged them over the line and made Mick look good in 2002/3.

.....well come on apparently that is what Judd did for Ratts 2010 -2011. :|
