We've got a succession plan. It goes like this.

1. You're sacked.
2. NEXT!!??

(We're Carlton, REDACT the rest!!)

Doubt it will be Voss. Left the game too long ago. We are after a recent retiree.

Can anyone tell me why it has to be a recent retiree? It just seems like we're limiting our options before we've begun. I'd like the best coach, I don't care if he hasn't played AFL for 20 years.

Voss said tonight he would be happy with a senior assistants role.

Jude would be absolutely perfect for us, but I would be guessing he'll be heading to Melbourne now.

I think Voss would be good, but I can't see how he would fit in to a Malthouse led team. I don't think Malthouse is a 'senior assistant' kind of coach. He seems to prefer picking younger coaches and letting them develop into senior coaches in their own right, doing things his way.

I have no idea who that leaves to be honest... black? Kane cornes if he doesn't go on? Joel Corey?

And so he should. Best job in football, IMO.

Yeah sure.

The idea is that the coach and his assistants are better equipped to do the job if they have experienced success at the highest level. It's broadly accepted that the game has changed significantly over the past decade or so. So ideally you would want a reasonable presence of people on your coaching panel who have had the relevant recent experience. We're a bit light on for that.

Voss was an awesome player, but I haven't seen anything that suggests to me he's anywhere near as a good a coach.

I would be pretty happy to get Voss in as an assistant. Could do wonders with our midfield.

If he can keep building the reputation of guru coach in waiting he can drive his asking price up

The longer he's 'out of the game' the less attractive he'll be. His value is going down.

Exactly right Brad. A couple that come to mind are Brereton and Garry Lyon.

That's true, even in the reasonably near future. But I reckon another season of "will he or won't he?", "will he come to us?", "ooh geez he's got a good footy brain" running through the media will help. After that then yeah his currency probably declines

I don't watch as much footy on tv as most of the posters in here but I'm yet to see what the fuss is about "Lingy".

Does he actually say anything insightful or is it an assumption that he must have a "great football brain" because he played in premierships despite being almost as slow as Diesel and a ranga to boot?

Anyone remember anything interesting he's said?

And I mean really interesting rather than just interesting in comparison to BT, Darcy, Richo etc. Which in relative terms probably isn't actually all that difficult considering a cantaloupe probably qualifies.

Unless your name is Roos then you get a massively big cheque to get you to coach.

So Voss experienced success at the highest level but you don't think he was a very good coach? Your second and last sentences are contradictory.

Coaching and playing are two different things. Being a recently retired gun midfielder does not mean you'll become a gun midfield coach. It's a very Carlton thing to think you will though, much like last year's "we've decided we need a senior coach who's won a flag." If we could go back a year would you choose Malthouse or Hinkley? I'd like the best midfield coach, I don't care if they're 30 or 60 and neither should Carlton.

I think much of it is to do with leadership and the type of player he was. A classy midfielder who led from the front but ran the other way just as hard. Exactly the sort of personality we don't have at the club.
