Maybe he was repaying Connolly for his work when everyone wanted Judd banned forever for the chicken wing. Connolly was quite fair then.

But @#$%&! them both they've been cauliflower in this.

"This will not define the Essendon* Football Club" - Andrew Maher, 27/08/2013

....and people feel comfortable having this bloke employed at Carlton to host digital media programs and functions?

It's another sign that we're a kitten of a club. This guy has chosen his path. Time to cut him loose.

He plumbed a new depth this morning with that comment.

Andy, you may as well keep going down the path you're on and hope that Essendon* start paying you to host gigs. I for one will not watch or attend a Carlton broadcast/event that you are involved with. So bring the poms poms tomorrow and go your hardest.

Maybe he's just going by his experience as a Carlton supporter where noone has mentioned our salary cap breaches in the last 10 years :garthp:

Is that an admission or did you forget to put one of these in :screwy: ..................

I just couldn't care less what others think as long as they're honest about it.
If that's what Maher truly feels then so be it. Why would he compromise his integrity just to toe some sort of party line.

If he is though playing this out for a mate (?) then it will come back to bite.

We'll see and to be honest I have little interest in the matter and what it means to be a "True" Carlton person.

No agenda here, harker.

All he needs to do is be neutral, AFAIC, and I wouldn't have a problem.

He's now a cheerleader for Essendon*, and apparently willfully adding to the misinformation Essendon* are promoting regarding doping at their club.

He's claimed on twitter that he had been concerned about 'the process' of how this had played out (again trotting out the approved message from hanke and co) i.e. the AFL are bullies, ASADA is useless etc. He then went on to claim that now the charges were out he could talk about the substance. And what has he done since then? He's shredded whatever credibility he had remaining and basically turned the Hangar from being a 30 minute TV show to a daily 3 hr radio love in.

Which is fine. That's his choice and he's clearly made a considered choice that he is going to defend Essendon* and his mate to the hilt.

My personal view is that I don't think he's a fit representative of the Carlton Football Club in the current capacity he gets paid to fill. My personal choice will be not to support any club function he is paid to be involved with.

When you have the likes of FlogDog praising you for doing a great job commenting on Essendon* you know you've strayed too far into Jamestown and already have a cup in hand.

One thing I know is that none of us know whether Maher would be making the same stance should it have been The Bulldogs in this situation.

I haven't been following all things Maher as he's just another media personality that just so happens to barrack for Carlton.

I can just see this thread being driven carefully and I just choose not to jump onto the bus. What happens to Maher happens to him but I don't want to be part of that drive.

This.
Maher is on the koolaid big time.
James probably called him and said "Mate, nice Ralph Lauren cardy, mate" and Andy went all gushy and starry-eyed

fair call, harker we all make personal decisions and I respect yours.

He's not an unintelligent bloke. He would have a million questions running through his brain which he knows he should be asking Watson. He chooses not only to avoid asking those questions, but to deflect any caller coming on who wants to ask them. And then once he's done deflecting or ridiculing callers, he puts out ridiculous statement such as the one this morning re: Essendon*'s legacy out of all this. If he's not doing that he's peddling the Essendon* PR machine lines on querying procedure, competence and bias of whoever Essendon* is arguing with at any given moment.

Watson choose to work that radio station every weekday morning and be a part of every hastily convened Ch 7 panel show. He's fair game.

It's a great thing he's made lots of nice friends at Windy Hill, like flogdog, because he's lost a hell of a lot of friends at Carlton.

I would imagine a prerequisite of keeping his SEN gig is 'getting along with' Tim Watson. So it's no surprise at all that Maher is backing the horse called self interest. He has a young family and (presumably) a mortgage.

But I think when you're selecting people to host footy club functions, you really should be using people who have a clear and obvious bias towards your club. It's what we want at these things: we want to drink from our own Kool Aid. We want people who care as much as we do, and who wear their heart on their sleeve like we do, MCing these things. It's why we pay to attend them: being surrounded by like-mindeds and all. I WANT the host to take potshots at Essendon* and Collingwood, etc. That's the theatre of it all.

On that basis, if it were my call I wouldn't use Maher again. He's now a very poor choice when you're putting on a function for the converted. And personally, I wouldn't pay to see him speak at anything because he's proven himself to be just another mediocre media hack. I'd rather listen to someone who is capable of speaking their mind, rather than toeing the line.

So on my list would be:

Entertaining media personalities (not journalists) with a clear bias towards the team (Dave Hughes, etc)

Journalists who speak without fear or favour, if you're after a more serious tone. I would happily pay money to hear Caro speak at a club function, because I don't think she brings club bias to her reportage at all.

Sam Lane is probably somewhere in the middle, so she's a pretty good choice.

What I don't want to see is someone who's gone out of his way to crawl up the corrupt bumhole of the EFC*.

I'm sorry if it came across as a personal attack as that wasn't the intention as I'm just playing a bit of devils advocate.
Can certainly see both sides of the argument and to be honest I haven't heard enough of Maher for him to put a knot in my gut just yet.

It sounds as though he's dug a bit of a hole for himself and may find it hard to crawl out of.
He certainly hasn't been the only one though through this saga and yes, some may have their head knocked off for sticking their necks out too far. We'll see.

I have already said here in this thread that i have no problem with Maher having his own opinion BUT i have made a point of listening to him on SEN over the past days ( i dont usually listen to his show as it doesn't fit in with my schedule).

Whilst not being bothered by his opinion i found his sycophantic cheerleading where Essendon* is concerned to be way over the top for someone who has a role at this club.

I'm not sure that i have ever heard him being so strong on any issue before and certainly never heard him passionately defending this club when his media mates lay the boots into us.

The whole thing was quite disturbing.
