Tonight was an ironic result for mine. This is mainly because when I think of our climb off the bottom post-2007, my highlight game was actually the one in 2008 against the Dogs.
Yep... that's right. The absolute apex of our post wooden spoon period in my mind was the 2008 game against the Dogs at Etihad where we were nearly thirty points down and beat them by nearly thirty points. The one where Fev turned to Lake (I think?) and told him he was lucky because the Fev show was about to start and Lake had the best seat in the house. We were young, we were full of promise, we were fit, and we ran all over them. Gibbs looked like he'd be a Brownlow medallist, Judd was in his prime, Kreuzer was deadly in front of goal and influencing games.
For mine, it has been downhill ever since. We were frail against the Lions in that first final and then against the Swans in the second. Yes we beat the drug cheats (possibly before they were drug cheats

) but even then when you watch the first fifteen minutes you'll see a mentally suspect team doing their best to lose it.
That's why tonight is ironic for me. If 2008 v the Bulldogs signaled hope and the promise of a flag, 2013 versus the Bulldogs was where it was snuffed out once and for all. Kreuzer didn't play but his knee has cruelled him, Murphy is currently almost a hologram of a footballer, Gibbs has never gone anywhere, Judd's body means his best is behind him, and the best seats for the Fev show are in the Vanuatu Casino.
A deep breath and time to move on from this list. Let's hope that at some time in 2014 we do something radical like get a Rising Star nominee (who was our last one?). Or in the offseason we actually do what other clubs do and embrace the draft. Or maybe scour other club's lists for that nugget of gold that no one else can see rather than get stooged with someone else's rubbish.
May the force be with us.
