Hard to argue with either of them.

Win/Loss we haven't improved.
But I think we play more as a team than we have previously.

Out consistency of effort is vastly improved however our midfield has gone massively backwards as Murphy Judd and carazzo all shadows of past selves

If they were all at 2011 levels we would be top 4

All about midfield for us; just not doing what it did in 2010/2011

Why?
Judd, Murphy and carazzo all having worse season, with only Murphy any chance to return to same level
We have no next group of mids ready, we failed to plan (read draft and develop) and this is our greatest failure. We are reliant on mclean, Gibbs, yarran, tuohey and robinson. We have talked about the faults of these players ad nauseum, unfortunately this will not be a quick to fix.

We also have MM not playing the group in midfield as often as I would have thought... Why. Many reasons no doubt.

All in all I think we are a fair way off unless we recruit amazingly well come years end.

The difference between our best and worst has improved

We've probably lost a couple of games due to the experimental nature of the year (Surely that's a coach's perogative, particularly in his first year)

Assuming we win today (and I think we will), the first StK game is probably the only game we've lost that we were expected to win)

Players needing to adopt to a new game plan, a hard arsed coach and some confronting self reflections about their comfort levels around the club

A new captain trying to cope with injury, more treatment and the weight of expectation

Discuss again round 15 2014. Right now, the data is not reliable IMHO

Actually, it's quite easy.

All the reasons they gave were list management prior to 2013. Players around the 22-24 mark that we should have had established were all selected by the previous regime. They weren't getting a game nor regulars last year FFS (Mitchell, McCarthy, Watson, Lucas, Bootsma, Davies, Collins, Casboult, McInness* Bower, Russell etc.)

Ask yourself these questions
In September last year, which Carlton youngster were we excited about (and confident of) taking the next step?
How many Rising Star nomnations did we have in 2011-2012

For em the big difference is Ratts was coaching for success every week to solidify his contract.

Mick is coaching for the development of the list over the next few years.

Hey, I'm hating that we aren't as succesful as I'd want to be, but I'm also confident that Mick has long term development in mind. He is finding out who can truly play and who can't.

Lets just hope we can get a few extroverts in to liven up this list.

Its hard to argue with most of what was mentioned in these articles. I agree with others that overall we have improved and with a bit of luck wins against Richmond and Essendon* would have us sitting 11-7.
We have been saying it for awhile, our recruiting has been terrible, something the club must have been aware of as Hughes was removed as head recuiter. Looks like a rebuild is in order, although we are not coming from as far back as previously.

My advice to everyone is to go back to the Essendon* thread.

We can revisit our own club next year after delistings, trades, and the draft.

Right now though the shocked to be sitting here thread represents a happy place. Forget all about our own club and go and revel in red and black misery

Good idea Molly, too depressing here.

Why was Hughes just removed from the head recruiting role? Either he can do the job or can't!!! Isn't 10yrs enough??

In simple terms we are developing a style to take us further. Unfortunately a number of players are struggling with this and changes will be made.

The ballistic style of years previous could only take us so far.

Top 4 is an overstatement, but I do agree with your points.

I agree with this. As bad as last year's results were, they were actually pretty flattering. With a fair degree of luck, we managed to win some close ones, that we probably shouldn't have won. This year it's been the opposite. Probably could of/should of been a 4-5 win better season this year. The fact it hasn't probably has alerted us to the real structural weaknesses we have, which perhaps may not be a bad thing as we plan for the future.

Read the articles this morning. Kills me some obvious truths about our current situation.

It just depresses me to think our current board and previous coaching regime really [REDACTED] up the list.

I also do not forget the long term negative impact the unprecedented Ron Evans lead AFL Commission decision did to Carlton back in 2002 and its impact we are still feeling today.

I would have expected some improvement under MM but I think other clubs lists started to mature whilst ours was on the slide or not improving at all.

Horrible situation which can be rectified with some excellent yet hard decisions on the list come years end and the ability to attract say 3-4 really great players via trades and the like.

If we are not successful once again at the draft or the trade table then I think in 2014 I will buy memberships for my 2 kids, forget myself and the rest of the clan I buy for and focus on other interests.

We need a change...not just on the list.

Fingers crossed lady luck and players pride turns things around, despite the gist of the articles pointing out we have not much quality and leadership to succeed. Hard to argue with that.

We're average despite having one of the highest numbers of top 10 draft picks on our list. That's the really sad part.

Unfortunately we banked all our success on the number 1 picks in the belief they would make us successful.

It's the middle tier players that we have developed.

Imagine Murphy at Collingwood, or Geelong or Hawthorn where the middle tier players pull the team up. The high draft picks are simply the cream and are able to do their stuff without having to be the reason for winning or losing.

We need our foot soldiers to stand up.

This stuff needs to be publicised so those in charge can have the blowtorch put on them, which is a sad indictment on our club for any action to be taken. They wont listen to the informed members on TC, so King & Robbo echo exactly what we've been saying for years!!!

Yes, although while our worst has certainly improved, unfortunately this gap has also closed because our best has dropped a fair bit.

It's difficult when you have a bozo as president

The recruitment over the last 5-10 years has been deplorable

Inability to read the landscape

Hopefully now with Geelongs previous 2IC and the experienced Malthouse we will get things right but I suspect success is not realistic for the Judd, Waite, Carrazzo, Simpson, Scotland, McLean era
