Hmmm, I was suspicious all along....we went from 46k to 50k in a week or two.......and the 50k just happened to coincide with our MCG negotiations

I'm amazed it's taken you so long to realise that ALL clubs do this Synbad. There's allocations of memberships given away at every club. Every year. Whether it's to sponsors, supporters, students, kindergartens, cafes or indians - it's happening. I was handed a Williamstown Family membership this season because I drink coffee at the same cafe as some of the coaches. So it's happening at VFL level too. Yes, it bolsters numbers - but it's also good PR. You might get a follow up customer the following year, friends and family members to join as well, a trip to the club that culminates with purchases at the shop....and all of a sudden - that 'free' membership now has a measurable dollar value straight to the clubs' coffers.

and Synners...Philanthropy IS fun!

im amazed youre saying its normal.

Sponsors getting memberships as part of the sponsorship package as contra has been going on at Hawthorn, Collingwood and other clubs for many years, and is good practice. All of a sudden Carlton does it and you kick up a stink?

It's well known through Collingwood, Westpac receive (at least) 10,000. What they do with those is their business...give them to staff, clients, radio stations, at parent/teacher nights at Abbotsford Primary School....doesn't matter. Why does it matter? Let it go...there are bigger fish to fry and you're worried about a little 'Christmas in July' generosity emanating from Visy Park? Least of your worries.
