Surrey that's 4 - not 10

surrey thinks its 2002 ... where teams only needed 4.

we bat very shallow in the midfield.. in turn it makes everyone look shithouse!!

thats and alack of leaders needs to be addressed!!!

But it's not even 4!! Judd and Murph (who is terribly out of confidence). The other two named are not permanent midfielders. What happened to Tex as a midfielder?? We need to rethink our whole approach. And yes we need 10 midfielders. Look at Sydney last week.

More good players... more players look good.. less good players.. more players look bad....

dunno if its physics.. or mathematics.. but its logic...!!!

and recruit players that play in crucial parts of the ground.. and are capable of playing the modern game.. can kick..run .. defend and spread..

oh and dont forget leadership.

leadership is not one player.. but every player within the team

there should be leaders on every line... and every player ideally should be a leader...even if one of them is a captain...

Anyone still think we shouldn't trade Yarran and Gibbs for No 1 (Tom Boyd) now ?

yeah me!!!...

most idiotic thing i have ever heard...!!!

no matter how good he is.. will he be better than riewoldt was??

nick never won a flag...

its about depth of good players.

yarran and gibbs are both very good players... but we have too many ordinaries

+1
we need look no further than the likes of Sydney and Geelong, as to how to recruit and develop correctly.

You both have a point but I think you are both wrong. It's the attitude that goes with it either way (putting too many eggs in one basket) that is the issue, not the pain of the trade. A player like that could mean more than simply having a more than competent forward and unlike Judd he will grow with the club. He would/should be part of the rebuild and not the be-all, end-all.

I don't see Effes' point. Give us five years starting from 1995. We haven't even contested a premiership in 15 years and even that one was a fluke. Let's get good and then not rebuild for six years. :?

Just because they won a flag in 07 didn't mean they stopped using the draft to replenish the list.

Look at how few picks we had in 2009 and the ability of those picks

12 Lucas
43 Davies
59 Kerr

Geelong
17 Menzel
28 Duncan
40 Christensen
42 Vardy
56 Cowan

They backed themselves in with extra picks - after just winning the @#$%&! flag! Often after a team wins the flag they may trade an earlyish pick based on the thinking they can grab another flag quickly.

Geelong have taken the best approach - keep loading up on good players and then you can have sustained success.

What a terrrible loss after such a good start.
Waite going down was the turning point.
It was freezing sitting in the top of the Southern stand.
The only enjoyment i got was seeing the fireworks when the Storm got a try.

We have been really competitive all year so tonight was a real shock.
Collingwood were much harder at it, have a decent forward line and play with spirit.

And I don't think they enjoy the song either, when they get a chance to sing it that is.

Rightly or wrongly, there would be no player in the AFL, or probably Australian sport more generally, more important to his team than Waite is to Carlton. As soon as he went down, I knew we were in trouble, particularly due to the flow-on effect that this would have on Henderson and Casboult. The whole balance of the side was thrown out and we had no answers.

Time to bring in Matthew Watson and send Henderson forward? I know that Watson has not exactly been banging the door down but we are short of options and surely Malthouse wants to see if Watson can do a job at senior level?

Freo improved when they lost footy manager Icke plus Hughes and Rogers.. their recruiting became better....

Food for thought..

Of and we als have on our books another footy legend... the infamous Barry Prendergast ex Melb recruting manager as a forward scout..

Why???

Why would u go out and bring hacks to your club???

Why???

Time and again when kicking we sat the ball on the head of our target: so many of their goals came from putting the ball out in front on the lead. This has been happening for so long...and it's the same in the reserves.
Parko on ABC was gutted: in particular he discussed his reaction as a coach and talked about having to pay a price to win the ball in modern footy. He said there were way too many Blues who weren't prepared to pay that price (and a number of repeat offenders over the season/years): he had been writing them down during the game but I missed him reading them out. Pretty sure Yaz was on the list! Pies coach was right about last week being not fair dinkum - well, it was us not fair dinkum this week.
I think it was Nathan Burke along with Parko who commented on Lucas as getting lots of the ball but using it really poorly too often: Finey on SEN said similar saying "I can understand why Carlton supporters are frustrated with him".
I still believe Levi is the best choice to support Waite and Kruz but he's not ready to carry the load when one of them is missing: Club, who in the vfl team would provide more upside than Levi? We've been through that process and it aint Warnock, Hampson, Rowe or Mitchell!

He probably has an idea, but he has not given him a senior game yet and I would like to think that he would at least give a player who we (and other clubs) considered worthy of a first-round pick three years ago an opportunity.

I know what you're saying, but you must show that you actually deserve an opportunity.

While "earn your spot" is nice in theory and does work in practice in some cases, I think that the gap between the VFL and AFL has become so large that what happens at VFL level is not necessarily a good indicator as to what will happen at AFL level. Watch a VFL game and then watch an AFL game - they are barely comparable.

Some players will just play better at AFL level than they will in the VFL. It has to be about what works best for Carlton - I would hate to think that we would not pick a player that we thought could help Carlton simply because that player had not been dominating in the VFL.

I am not saying that Watson will come in and perform, I just think that with Waite going down and Henderson probably needing to move forward, it is worth a try.
