If the AFL pushes ahead with its 2 sub, 2 interchange bench scenario for season 2014. Then players who can run all day like Brock McLean and Nicholas Graham  - become all the more valuable towards the end of games regardless of their pace, or lack thereof.

Why base your recruiting on a rule that may be transient?

..i agree with your question, but isn't this what recruiters do..?.. ..i mean, to a certain extent you recruit with rules/tactics in mind.. ..not just in regards to endurance, but trends in games.. ..for a while it was athletic freaks, then old fashioned footballers, long left foot kickers, fleet footed outside players, contested ball winning inside monsters, leaping rucks, power rucks, burst impact types etc etc..

..because the game is ever-changing, either due to AFL rule tweaking, or coaching trends, every few years there's a shift in recruiting, either for type of player or which players get picked when, these days it's midfielders ruling the draft just like the awards..

That well maybe but havn't seen the AFL in the past few years roll any rules back.

And it looks like unless "Chester" Anderson gets the flick soon that the 2+2 Interchange/Sub rule is coming in.

Its probably another reason why we took Troy Menzel, because as he takes on the 3rd forward spot it will release Andrew Walker to midfield, and as we know Andrew can run all day (and fast too  ).

All in all I think we have done pretty well.

Real depth added to our list and have not lost anyone of significance.

The positive for me is the real depth and body size added around the ball. Something we have lacked.

McLean, Robinson, Bell, Cachia, Ellard, Curnow, Touhy, Duigan are real "hard heads' that will add toughness all over the ground.

Judd (now free of the captaincy burden), Murphy, Gibbs, Yarran, Lucas, Simpson, Menzel, Betts provide the class.

The real key for 2013 is the ability of our talls to get near their potential and stay injury free. Consistency from most of Kruezer, Warnock, Hampson, Casboult, Jamison, Henderson, Watson, Mitchell will make the difference.

Add that to the defensive structure and the ability to get the best from teams by Malthouse and 2013 is something to look forward to!

I have to agree - I think that it was the Adelaide game where Vince, Dangerfield and that other blonde player (name escapes me) that monstered us around the ball which exposed us as such weaklings around the contested ball situation.

Players like Cachia and Bell etc address the strength part of the equation not sure if they have the speed, but hopefully they will clear a path for Murphy, Judd, Gibbs, Simpson, Yarran etc to run amok.

I don't think swearing at the opposition will help out much. :?

I've defended these guys as much as I can but come the end of the year tough decisions need to be made.

Put simply our list doesn't have the ability, skill or depth to challenge for a top 4 spot. For whatever reason a lot of our kids haven't stepped up.

IMO I would keep:

Walker
Menzel
Murphy
Judd
Gibbs
Henderson
Simpson
Kruezer
Lucas
Warnock
Robinson
McLean?
Bootsma
Temay
McInnes
Armfield
Carrazzo
Waite
Casboult
Garlett
Jamison
White
Ellard?
Tuohy
Bell

Trade:

Yarran
Hampson
Laidler

Delist (or Trade):

Watson
McCarthy
Mitchell
OKeefe
Rowe
Scotland (retired)
Duigan
Collins
Davies
Cachia
Curnow
Dale
Buckley

Does making changes at the bottom end of the list really fix the problem?

Do we have the guts to make changes at the top end?

Yeah, I know what you mean, you must give up something to gain something and draft picks (at least in the first two rounds) are precious.

Yarran is untouchable imo...literally when he gets on his bike.

He's the type you need to keep. Kicks well, breaks lines....just a terrible sub....but that wasn't his choice...BIG MM mistake that one imo.

But when he does......he's hot.

Like the rest of our team...isn't the problem between the ears, other than Casboults kicking and Kreuzer's marng...although Kreuzer imo can improve his marking if he gets the right development.
