In the last 12 years they've been in 5 GF's a gazillion PF's .

That builds an expectation of success. People will buy that every year. Eddies been a godsend as well, but for me Carlton supporters are saying " give us something" and they don't mean a scarf or beanie.

If we start beating Swans and Hawks and dispatching Norf and St Kilda that would probably help, but we need to be involved in the last two weekends of the year to break out of the membership ceiling we have at the moment.

That's all true cimm but it's more than success alone.
It's a feeling of being connected and important part of the whole.

Hawthorn have done that and Richmond are doing it. We haven't and are now playing catch up.

True Harks.

Not sure how you sell "we are a club of the people" when everything else we've done for 30 years is about "high roller" supporters, their family, flunkies and hangers on.

Is it any different now?

Hawks are the "family club" and so are we, as long as your family is in pokies or packaging.

Didn't they downgrade the help us get to the G promise to a mere 50K?

'We' being the apathetic Carlton supporter base? You're probably right. But the club needs it. The move to Etihad was a grab for cash and a little pressure from AFL headquarters who we were in no position to squabble with at the time. Things have changed. The club dictates its future this time 'round.

The magic number (50k) is important - but more to show in negotiations that there is incremental growth, and enough growth to suggest that this club is getting too big for the Stadium it currently has a contract with. The revenue from membership figure coupled with the 'bums on seats' figure is a much better one for the Carlton hierarchy to use because they both show us to be a top 3 Victorian club.

At 50k we'd still be smaller than Essendon*

I think Essendon* are a prime example of artificial growth.
