How does home ground sound for starters.
Our supporters hate Etihad. I now know another 5 that aren't renewing this year b/c they hate the ground!!!!
We belong at the MCG and the AFL with Collo refused to let us go there. They have flowered our membership numbers & dollars up. But you knew that. I don't know why I have to keep spelling it out.

ps. I'll just add if anyone thinks the AFL and the AFL commission is looking after our best interests everytime we negotiate anything, they are living in lala land (just using your saying Synbad to help people understand)

Yes and Richmond supporters drowned ours out at the G a couple of weeks ago Surrey.... did your 5 go to that?
Forget about the crowd at the G against Collingwood

What you keep spelling out is wasted vitriol regarding Princes Park. And you probably need to get your story straight regarding Ian Collins as well - because you're miles off when it comes to Collo.

There's no one thing that points to our membership numbers not growing at a rate akin to that of other clubs (even though Essendon* only leads our tally by 6,000)...it's many things - whether it be people dropping off after our disastrous decade, not having our home ground, not having the time to attend the football, not willing to part with their hard earned until this team looks as though it's a legitimate contender or Carlton people coming to the realisation that a large percentage of our supporters are simply 'apathetic' supporters and it's difficult turning them into members.

Eloquently put Doc.

...and there's more reasons to our "apathy" such as economic psyche...not mine in particular; I'm proudly an CFC addict whether its economically viable or not.
Proud to be an associate of this club Sticks or no Sticks.
The Doc has hit the central "nervous" system of our club's supporter base.

One of the major things is the embedded thoughts in our supporters psyche is that there is always a benefactor with a shit load of money to come to our rescue or the fact that we have always had a contact with cash from the big end of town that will come to the rescue so that we don't need to join up as a member.

You can go back as far as Kenneth Luke, George Harris, Ian Rice, John Elliott etc - then there is the perception of our connections to the political corridors of power Robert Menzies, Malcolm Fraser, no money but again the perception that we have powerful friends in high places that will come to the rescue of the club, and of course more recently Richard Pratt and now the poker machine revenue from the Mathieson family.

This is major reason (in my opinion) why our supporter base which has been researched as amongst the biggest in the AFL has a she'll be right attitude as far as joining up as a member is concerned.

Pointing to the fact we play the majority of our home games at Etihad as a major factor in the low growth of our membership numbers is laughable.

Why? Because you don't agree with it? Well that's your prerogative, but don’t tell me what I know as fact, is not. Get over yourself.
Since you know everything and all about Collo - answer which ground our board voted for the 1st night, including numbers?

We've spoken about this before AGRO, but perhaps there's not an understanding at Board level of the way we (and nearing 40 I'm probably about as young as you can go) perceive the footy club having witnessed success compared to the younger fan. I had very happy Primary School years and while 1987 was the only flag the club won while I was in High School, in my early 20's the flag was enjoyed again but on a whole other level (with alcohol) in 1995.

But we have thousands of supporters who fall under the category of never knowing success. On another thread we're discussing boys who look like they might be drafted in this years' intake who were born in 1995. Remember the Semi-Final of 1994 when the Cats beat us without Bairstow, Couch and Hocking? Troy Menzel was born that week. He must view Carlton the same way I view Richmond - although I can remember the Tigers last flag.

As much as I don't have a whole heap of time for Gen Y - they're the target market. Them, their fairweather friends, and soon enough, their kids. And as such, a shitload of our marketing should be geared toward the younger Carlton brigade and the prospective Carlton supporter base. Put the hard yards in now, and you'll reap the benefits down the track. That includes schools and Universities - one of which is on our doorstep. Without that focus - that membership number doesn't have much chance of getting bigger.

FWIW, I spent a lot of time with Ian Collins during Carlton's move to Etihad. In my opinion, he was not doing it to make money for the stadium; he was doing it to keep Carlton a going concern. Whether the likes of Surrey Blue believe that or not is neither here nor there. That was the vibe at the time. I'm a little over the besmirching of Ian's character and his role in keeping Carlton open for business during that period.

Well said HTP. I don't think Surrey realises just how close we came to oblivion. Collo made some tough decisions. They weren't always popular, but I still see a Carlton Football Club running around.
