I've read the first 10 pages of this thread and that's enough for me. Not gonna bother catching up on the rest, but will add my 2 cents:
Thought we'd get beaten by more pre-game. Hampson and Betts are very important to us and not having them available hurt us a lot. Felt like we were 1 goal away from breaking away at quite a few times, but just couldn't get that goal. Thought Yarran played really well and considering how shattering it would've been for him to miss the potential match winner last week, I don't like saying this much but his miss just before 3/4 time was awfully deflating and gave me a bad feeling about the result straight away.
Laidler was terrible, as was Duigan the week before, but hopefully he finds form again. We know how good he can be. Bootsma looks lost at times, but shows some good signs too. I think he should be persevered with. Davies is a guy that 95% of supporters think is out of his depth and I agree. Armfield and Tuohy had time against Elliott and we saw the results of that matchup.. So unfortunately 4-5 of our worst players were in the defensive area.
Casboult was ineffective, but like Bootsma he does show good signs. Again, I'd stick with him, at least until Waite and Hampson are ready to go (although if Hampson can return this week that creates a selection dilemma). Rowe showed good signs too, but Casboult has a few more years up his sleeve and potential to improve more i think.
Lucas missed 2 tackles, but was otherwise very good. His mark running back with the flight when he had the head clash with Walker showed that he's more committed to the contest than we've seen in the past and his confidence is certainly increasing.
But while it's easy to discuss individual players, some posters above have identified the true problem, and that is our inability to possess the ball when we're under the pump. All our midfield group (even the better users of the ball) just belted mongrel punts forward in the last 1/4. There was an absolute lack of composure and ability to spot up a target, which was often available laterally if they looked. Robinson was probably the worst for this, but we saw it from Bell, Murphy, Carrazzo etc. too. This has been a trait of this team for many years. It was the inability of Ratten to get these players to improve in this area that led to his dismissal and it will be Malthouse's ability to rectify this problem that will determine how successful his tenure here is. We can whinge and moan about a lack of key forwards and say that things will be better with Waite down there, but if our mids continue to s**t themselves every time they're under the pump and continue bombing it forward to no one in particular, then it won't matter who lines up at FF.
I actually have faith in Malthouse to improve our current list in this area and identify players who possess the right skillset and mental capabilities to hit targets under pressure, I'm just not delusional enough to expect to see instant results. The fact that we played far better this week than the week before is a good enough indication to me that I should keep the faith in where the club is heading.
Good post.
