There's a such a thing called team balance. other than touhy who else in our team can play on a small forward type? The pies have injected a few of these quick small forward flank types that can run. We need a Joseph type to run with.

Bell will get his time to shine but I'd rather have a versatile competitor in the side like Joseph than a bell type who butchers the ball with every second disposal he has.

this

is ridiculous. FFS it's round 1. We all rate Bell higher than Joey, but it's a long season, and there are plenty of plausible, if unsatisfying reasons why Bell might have missed for Joseph in one particular game, not to mention that they play quite different roles.

Out: Betts, Hampson, Bootsma

Henderson will start forward first half. Move onto lynch second half

White to play on Lynch first half. Then play forward second half

Laidler to play the floating half back play maker role. (Where he should be)

Kruizer to ruck most of the game and rest forward.

Walker and Yazz Running off half back.

Buckley and Gartlett applying frontal pressure like we've never seen before.

Murph, Carrots, Juddy, McLean, Gibbs, Lucas and Simpson doing the job through the middle.

What about Garlett? Did you forget him?

Bell has played 5 games; the kid has to earn his spot.

Not saying he shouldn't be playing on Sunday, just that we forget he was still just a rookie in his previous AFL game.

Synbad, I must ask you the question.

Do you actually support Carlton?

I have read your posts for a few years now and can't remember a single, positive quote.

Depends how you define support Carlton?
Waving my flag at stupidity and insipid mediocrity that has been us for over a decade?
Is that what you mean???

Well i dotn support that....

Do i support Carlton???YES! absolutey yes... so i dont wish to see it be a lazy joke of a club .. its painful.

I dont do the blind USA !!! USA!! USA!!! patrotism approach to Carlton.

Oh and i dont buy memberships anymore... cos i dont like my money getting squandered by Bozos.

I can tackle that question a hundred different ways... and in some ways i dont support it and in other ways i do.
It all depends on the different perceptions you and i have a bout what support means.

But dont pretend you care about the club more than i do....

Agreed. I took the heart wrenching decision not to buy the family membership last year and won't again this year. 50/50 about on/off field issues. First time in 23 years I was not a member. Not even an email or phone call why.

Bell on preseason form, probably is going better than almost any of the mids, but he's got to force his way past AJ, Robbo and co?

Bell is up against our attacking players not our defensive players so it's a bit hard to say he's keeping him out. Bell might be able to do a Shane Tuck role but really he needs to be a better option than our existing runner/midfielders.

More accurate to say Robinson and Simpson are keeping him out.

AJ would be keeping grunt workers and defensive players out like Ellard, Curnow etc.

Would it be fair to say we didn't quite have the balance right last game and needed a few more ball winners like Bell and a few less ball watchers like AJ? Especially as he was subbed on for Robinson.

I think we were at least one, maybe two inside midfielder types short.

Well if Malthouse did have a word to Bell at the VFL game on the weekend at quarter time, he might well have said "you're a chance next week."

I believe they selected Joseph for Nahas last week.

If we picked a player to specifically pick up Nahas then we have seriously taken our eye off the ball.

Bell had some good patches in the pre-season, but I wouldn't say he was unstoppable by any means. Bell still has a lot of areas to work on, and while i really like the way he plays and think he'll be in the side pretty soon, the amount of love for him in this forum is a bit over the top at the moment. All pre-season he's been noted as a fringe player by most on this site. Some had him in their best 22, some didn't. But now come round 1 when he narrowly misses out people are outraged and think he has reason to leave the club? That's just rubbish.

Bell is a must this week given our ordinary performance in the centre square and round the packs last week
Joseph really is not good enough and until there is someone else to take his place we are not a top 8 side

Not sure why joseph gets picked for nahas he doesnt have a great record on small forwards -hello milne - get someone else -joseph broke even with ablett 5 years ago since then has rarely beaten his opponent

Warnock should come in to ruck against Jolly
Kreuz CHF predominantly - walker to the forward line
armfield to take betts role

True...but Nahas fits the category of "spud small forward likely to kick 5 goals" Jarryd Blair anyone?

Its more for the physical presence he adds to a team that lacks it and that it's almost impossible for him to be knocked off the ball at the stoppages and after the way we were smashed in the middle last week I think it's fair enoughthat he's considered a must for this week.

No doubt that is the strength of Bell's game & there is merit to him being included this week, but the calls for him to come in have just been a bit over the top IMO. I've stated earlier that I'd have Buckley & Rowe in for Betts & Hampson, but if Robinson isn't fit to play, Bell is the logical replacement there.

I thought we had the balance pretty right last week. Mclean, Carrazzo, Judd, Robinson and Murphy seemed like enough ball winners to take into that game. Any more and i think we lose our outside run. Unfortunately, the above guys failed to stand up (aside from some patches from Judd).

I wouldn't have had Joseph in my 22, and naming a tagger as a sub seems stupid to me. Having said that tho he does add more pace and defensive options than Bell, and i assume that's why he's there.

What is wrong with our guys. Thought they would start off the season with killer instinct. But they just dont seem up at all.

Midfield has been crap. No-one is prepared to work hard. Too many super stars waiting for the ball to come to them.

Gibbs, Judd and Murphy are all superstars, but they dont run hard both ways, nor they tackle, block etc.

Last week we had missing players ie Touhy, Joseph, Duigan, Casboult and we cannot expect to win games of footy without everyone contributing.

Walker, Simmo, Robbo out of form.

Sorry but there is an issue with this group of players. Dont know how we can fix it to be honest. I am out of excuses for this team

Goodness knows how our forward line will function without Betts this week. Oh Geez !!!!!!!

Now I know its not the Coach, so WHO is it Carlton ? Yourselves - the players.........

FIRE UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walker was very good last week.

Levi has played less than 10 games, he will float in and out of games for some time while he matures/develops. He's shown he can bust packs etc, so hopefully he won't be so poor again this week. Although he didn't embarrass himself in the ruck, so at least he's not totally one dimensional.

We'll be right. The players will come good.

We have a Melbourne mid fielder helping out. Perhaps that's it?

Players drewgirl - simply not mentally strong enough -tend to crack rather than show resilience -take the easy path -think they can get by with talent alone - geelong win and have had an ultra- successful era because they are not only talented but also supremely mentally tough - brisbane when they had a successful era they had both components and going back further teams of 79-82 were absolutely ruthless and mentally tough

I have a feeling all this will change.
However, that does not mean I'll be checking in at the WFR.

Nope..I'm quietly worried but confident.
