Quote:
“I learned a lot, they’ll probably learn a lot. Just the methodology, the things you can do that work and things that don’t work and you’ve got to start to get the balance right,” Malthouse said.

“By working one way you do rob yourself of some defensive play and we took that gamble so I’m not too sure where I actually sit with that. It got us back in the game, but I’m not 100 per cent sure you can keep having shootouts with sides.

“Nonetheless I guess it was enough to spook Richmond a bit.”

Quote:
Carlton face a daunting start to the season, with Collingwood, Geelong, West Coast (away) and Adelaide to come in the next month, but Malthouse strongly rejected suggestions he needed to “pick players up”.

“What, do you think they’re walking around with their head down? They’ve come back and had a crack,” he said.

“This is one round. It’s Round 1 of a 22-week season. They’re not babies, they don’t need to be cuddled and caressed and told how unlucky they are. We know we got beaten by a better side and we know we’ve got a lot of work to do to make us more competitive.

“But this is not a kindergarten. These are grown men.”

Quote:
Malthouse criticised the Blues’ use of the interchange, claiming he was unhappy with only 106 rotations compared to Richmond’s 133.

But that was the extent of his irritation with his side’s first loss to the Tigers since 2008.

“There’s enough there,” he said.

“I said to the playing group, ‘There’s no witch-hunt in the rooms tonight’. It is simply that we need to look at why our planning didn’t work and why we were able to get back in the game.”

Malthouse said Marc Murphy and Chris Judd would continue to get better after limited preparation and said Bryce Gibbs would get more confidence in his game.

...and yet we've been a top 4 team at clearances for 3 years.
Strange that.
Of course its only the dreaded stats that tell me that. Not something substantially like "the vibe".

Apart from a midfield coach who's been out of the game for 10 years, whats changed? :?
Our midfield structures are terrible. We concede the ruckmans natural hitting zone at every centre bounce.
If we're going to continue like that, we may as well start the game at half back.

Those criticising Jamison etc are kidding themselves. Every time the backs busted an arse to clear the ball, it came back 15 seconds later.
Laidler being overlooked exascerbated the problem.
What were the intercept marking stats during the game? 15 to 5?

The positive for me was Malthouse saw how effective we could be in the second half when we threw the 'long kick to contests" game plan in the bin.
Hopefully he's smart enough to swallow his pride and allow the team to play to their strengths.

That's rubbish IMO.

Players intent as a group wasn't existent. Two players won't improve that.

I can't decide who was worse out of Casboult & Russell Morris...

Know he's the thinking man's favorite but Duigan is one of those players who makes me nervous every time he goes near the ball. Laidler doesn't.
AJ has found pics of Mick as well.
Kreuzer, 206 & Hammer all in our best 22.
But can't all play at the same time.

Didn't want to win then didn't know how to win.

Ever seen Mick swallow his pride, BV????

Really concerned that our players won't develop a defensive mind set. The unaccountable shoot out football of the last quarter makes supporters feel good for a week a month but will be exposed against good sides.

Malthouse looks like he has his very own Zac Dawson in Bootsma . The kid doesnt look ready to me and gave up 3 to 4 goals .
My favourite ever Irishman is not half the player he was last year needs to regain his form .
Casboult was found wanting
Maclean plays better when he is the main man not the 3rd or 4th stringer
Hammer despite missing set shots impressed me
Betts appeared out of sorts in the 1st half
Gartlett is better than Yarrran

Change back to Ratts game after half time insured we got back in it

Which sides?
Are Collingwood a good side, it works well against them. Geelong? Are they a good side? It works OK against them.
Forget the good sides. If we continue to kick to contests, we wont beat the poor sides.

Casboult. I noticed they had the Russell Morris Stand, so he must have been good.
Judy is still Captain, and hats off to him fro an amazing performance.
Could have sworn that Kreuzer point was a goal.
Missed it by that much.

Very worried for he next few weeks, but also hopeful we'll play a lot better.

lift ya heads you blokes !

really like Bootsma - reckon he'll grow into a real asset with a bit more experience and confidence

Walker played an excellent game - hardly fluffed a possession

Hammer and Kreuz performed their roles well

thought Hendo was reliable as usual - consistent performer

Yarran has to apply himself a lot more - bludging big time

Laidler better defensive option than Duigan

Lucas on the trade table IMO

Robbo going to have a limited career

Malthouse will tweak a few things and I think positive results will follow

Well said Rexy.

Bootsma shows some good signs. He's a young kid and makes some mistakes, but I hope we give him an extended run.

It really annoys me when some posters on this site bite your head off for questioning team selection or positions. I know I'm not privy to all the information and I know there would be a reason behind all the moves, but I don't see why we can't have an opinion on whether they are the right moves. And yes, I know the coaches know a hell of a lot more than I do, but what's the point of a footy forum if we can't have an opinion?

Many of us felt Joseph should not have been in the team and on last nights performance I think the opinion was validated somewhat. It was a glaring weakness in the lineup. He really offers nothing at AFL level and most of us have known this for a good couple of years. I'll leave the laidler non-selection alone because I think he mustn't have been 100%

I thought Malthouse was a coach who prioritised defence. Didn't look like it in the first half. For those criticising Joseph (although I'm not a fan) the damage was done mainly when he was on the bench. Laidler in for Duigan please. And much better discipline is required.

Went home feeling disappointed with the loss but was quite happy with the way we rallied - twice (in the third and fourth quarters.) Showed a lot of heart and spirit to fight on the way we did after being completely outplayed in the second quarter. Dont recall an occasion in the last couple of years when we have comeback from such a large margin.

Those two contentious decisions at the end of the third- 50m penalty was very stiff against duigan and Jake King flying forward and getting a free kick for in the back were momentum killers and if not for them we would have been a bit closer going into the last quarter.

All in all, not too fussed. Know Mick and the boys will get it right, just like fremantle under Ross Lyon last year. Im expecting a great finish to the year after the players work out what is expected and a ripping 2014.
