The Blueseum has a great article seeking to answer the question of who was the greatest Carlton player to never win a flag. Intrigued by the article I thought I’d have a crack at putting together a 22 from the 22 names put forward in that article The main challenge in trying to find a balanced team was the fact that 6 of the players were basically full-forwards, but Carroll was a flanker before he came to Carlton, Clover started and finished his career at Carlton on the flank and O’Brien and especially Warburton were smaller types, so in the end I was able to place them all in the one forward line with Davey at CHF and Cowley on the bench.

Comben Collis Whitnall
Hickmott Duncan James
Kerr Blackwell Lappin
Carroll Davey Clover
O’Brien Fevola Warburton
Donaldson Wells A Clarke
Chick Cooper Cox Cowley

Putting aside the lack of height in modern terms, that’s one hell of a team.

On talent alone, you can't go past Fevola. Streets ahead of most as a forward in his day, but miles behind in attitude.

What about Bert Boromeo? And Marc Murphy and Eddie Betts would be ahead of some of those. Scotland would be in the conversation too.

Gee Blackwell deserved a flag, runner up in the B&F in 1986 but injury hampered him in 1987 - he was a lot better than what a lot of people give him credit for

One of the best one on one footballers I have seen in the Navy Blue - he knew how to win his own footy and was as tough as nails

Fev played in an era which did not suit his persona and hijinks.

He was a 70's and 80's kind of man...lawless...no media...no mobiles with cameras...got away with everything coz the club always covered their bad eggs...refer to StKilda....plenty of great stories resonate from there....good deflection ay?

Agreed Bomba...very, very good player. If it rains - I'd pick Brad Shine. And I'd throw Mots in their for good measure.

Geez, what do Sean Charles and Jimmy Plunkett have to do to get some love around here.

Stop bugging cricketers for their personal repellents, for one.....

Yes he would of been good at 70s 80s st kilda, he would of been forced to either be a team man at the Carlton sides of that era or bigger off.

Note how all ex Carlton players from that era had no time for him. Sure it was work hard and play hard, but you still had to be part of the team ethos.
