I've had some good feedback from the club re: this. Expect some further discussion and communication soon. All good.

We'll swap however many Etihad games we have for however many MCG games Essendon* has if they're guilty

By all means use Facebook - but use it and twitter to direct the dumb flower to the website.

Because THIS...Click 'Like' if you want more home games at the MCG or comment if you are happy with the current arrangement. isn't very well done. I thought we were past efforts like that. It's lazy. What I'm advocating is more along the lines of this...

'The club is lobbying the AFL for more games at the MCG from 2015 onwards. You can read Greg Swann's statement to supporters outlining the process and benefits via this link...

...and that link would be on the club website and the afl.com.au webite (same difference). More people see that than see the facebook page.

Agree on all counts. They've picked a really dumb way to do this.

As mentioned, social media is an extremely powerful tool, and the club's use of it has improved out of sight the past couple of years. But the way they've done this is amateurish and lazy, and borderline counter-productive for one simple reason, there's no control. Many of the people are using the comments to say how much they want the G, or that they want to go back to PP (hell, I'm pretty sure I saw a "Bring back Fev!" one in there). It makes a mockery of the whole thing by letting the inmates run the asylum.

Use facebook as the gateway by all means, but FFS at least exercise some control over it.

Dear Doc,

The Carlton Football Club’s existing stadium arrangement - six home matches at Etihad Stadium and five at the MCG - concludes at the end of 2014.

With tenancy negotiations commencing in the middle of this year, Carlton is seeking to play the majority of its home games at the MCG - an 8-3 split for 2015 and beyond.

As you may be aware, the AFL controls the fixturing of games. But if the Club can claim a Membership base exceeding 50,000, the League will schedule more Carlton home matches at the home of football.

The Club has listened to Members & supporters, who clearly want to see their team participate in more home games at the MCG. This can only be achieved with the vital support of more Members - 50,000+ by the time negotiations open and 60,000 by the end of 2014.

Historically, the MCG has served as the backdrop for 15 of Carlton’s 16 Grand Final triumphs since 1906. Clearly, it is the preferred venue for this Club going forward.

I cannot underplay the importance of you becoming a 2013 Carlton Member if you haven’t done so already, as today’s Carlton team and the Carlton teams of tomorrow strive to push deep into September at the place where premierships are won.

Yours faithfully,

Greg Swann

Maybe Swann could try implementing some initiatives to inspire people to become members. Sort through some letters or get on the phone to lapsed members to find out why they don't.

Appearing dumbfounded by it all, pushing the message via the media and appearing on KB's program Friday mornings dont appear to be working.

For a start no self respecting Carlton Supporter would be listening to the irrelevant rantings of this dried up wizened old hairless asthenic.

That's true, but a letter has gone out to members, they've got some coverage in the print media and throughout the pre-season, the membership drive pushes it a little further. If we're close to 40k by Rnd 1 and then play some good footy early...we're a monty for 50k...all good.

What if we're not at 40k by round 1 and/or dont have a good start to the season?

Does Swann have a plan B?

Write another email?
Beg supporters again?
Scratch his head?

How about being a little proactive now?
Whats the worst that can happen?
We have a good start to the season and end up with 55k and he wasted time trying to find out why supporters dont join?

Nothing to fear Brad - it's all good.

They went with the social network conversation as a starting point to reach a broader audience this week and whilst I would have done it slightly differently - their facebook posts that normally have an average reach of around 17,500 people reached 40,000 with this one. The thinking being that it would give supporters the opportunity to talk about it prior to formally addressing the initiative through print media, radio and today's email.

All good.

Good to know.

We're confident begging supporters to join will be successful in getting to 50k, without having to care why the rest don't.

The apathetic ones will no doubt come out of the woodwork when wins appear.

Lets hope so. I'm sure the club have their fingers crossed.

Funnily enough - I don't see any begging going on. Just a simple equation. We can debate it until the cows come home about how the message is rolled out - I for one am just happy it's being rolled out. For many, it won't register until Captain Carrazzo puts it eloquently on national TV.

My words - not the clubs'. I don't think there'll be too much blame going on if the target fails to reach 50k.

Will there at least be some blame internally?

Ratten did not appeal to the membership, that is a big part of it and what they believe.
