The AFL should come out and say we give our players the right to protect themselves and if you want to have a go do so at your own perril because we will back the player to the hilt. Until that happens this stuff will continue because blokes will have a go just to get the player in trouble

You must be a hell of a witness SB.

It's not the same for every celebrity.
Some carry an aura of invincibility about them, others may have a "look but don't touch" feel about them and some garner respect from all sectors of the community etc.

Whether we like it or not Robinson has the tag of one of the most punchable faces in football and coupled with his somewhat loud, energetic and approachable nature makes him a target for "heroes"

You either deal with those facts or you just front up to the next BDO as a regular Joe but if you do, don't be surprised for what may ensue.

I would say there are more AFL footballers in the Robbo catergory than the Judd
You sit back and think of opposition players that get under your skin that you love to belt . They far out numbers those that dont

I don't think so.

Robbo would be in the top ten and McLean may just be there also along with Swan, Franklin, Milne and a few others.

All have high profiles, are instantly recognizable and just have the character traits (may be the wrong term) that allow them to be the target for abuse.

STATEMENT REGARDING MITCH ROBINSON

Carlton player Mitch Robinson has spoken with Club officials this morning following his involvement in an incident at a music festival on Saturday.

Robinson became involved in an altercation with a friend during the Big Day Out music festival after initially taking steps to prevent his friend's anti-social behaviour.

Immediately following the altercation Robinson left the festival of his own accord and contacted Club Officials.

Carlton General Manager of Football Operations Andrew McKay said Robinson should not have put himself in a position to be involved in such an incident.

"This type of behaviour, no matter what the circumstance, is not acceptable or in line with Club policy,” McKay said.
“Mitch is extremely remorseful and has accepted the Club's sanction.”

Robinson will complete two months of community service with the Salvation Army, working with the homeless and under-privileged in Melbourne’s CBD.

Additionally, Robinson will make a $1,000 donation to the Salvation Army.

The Club will make no further comment.

I guess the club feels he could have dealt with the situation better but sometimes the only law some idiots understand is that of the jungle. Slight tangent but a few years ago while at Adelaide BDO i got talking to a guy from Melbourne (He thought i may have been a Vic with my Carlton top on) and he was amazed at the difference in atmosphere between Melbourne BDO and Adelaide's. He felt Melbourne's BDO had been ruined for few years ago through various bogans, idiots etc who weren't there for the music, just looking to start trouble. Whereas he said Adelaide's was a pretty relaxed affair where people were there for the music. I thought to myself "yeah that's because we're still stuck in the 1960's and it's still all love and peace etc!" But if you look hard enough every BDO has their bunch of idiots.

I haven't been to a BDO, but what is the crowd and atmosphere like? I'm surprised at the descriptions of "a bogan" event.

I had friends who used to go in the 90's and the impression I got was that they were very friendly, happy events that were attended by a broad section of the community. Lots of uni students, some older people and copious amounts of green and ecstasy.

Has it changed that much?

It isnt as bogan as some are saying. THere is a mixed bag. The music loving crowd are usually found around the small stages and the atmosphere is great. RRR stage always has good bands.

Around the big stages things get messy with bogans watching the big name bands and some of the harder rocking bands attracting a different sort of crowd.

There are the short short , fluoro wearing flower types but far fewer than you get at those cheesy dance festivals where the muscle heads go.

The bogan element is growing year by year but generally you can go to the Big Day Out and watch some good acts, see some pretty girls and go home having a good day. Far from a no go zone for footballers.

The aggressors who were baiting Robbo would be found not guilty on the grounds of insanity because no person on their right mind would want to provoke Robbo.

Robbo's fearless. But there are people out there who will kick your head in until you die, simply because you 'disrespected' them. There's some very broken people out there...
