This is why I feel sorry for bogan AFL players*.

A guy like Judd, his idea of a big day out is breakfast at Dukes (maybe smashed avocado and tomato on wholemeal no butter, a skim latte) with the Financial Review, Bec and Oscar. Then maybe going to the opening of a friend's new business venture, or a mate of Bec's gallery opening... followed by some quiet time at home, then off to dinner followed by a few hours in the VIP section of a club he part-owns.

A young bogan AFL player's idea of a big day out is the Big Day Out.

Say to a guy like Judd - avoid places like this and he's "hey no problem it's not my kinda thing anyway, no great loss". Say that to a Mitch Robinson, and you're telling him to avoid doing pretty much the only recreational activities he's probably into.

Trouble is, a guy like Mitch can go with the very best of intentions to have a good time at a place like BDO, and he'll get hassled and possibly drawn into an altercation precisely because of the huge numbers of idiots there. Judd won't get that doing HIS favoured recreations.

I guess guys like Mitch have to sacrifice more, and be far more circumspect, than guys like Judd. It's hard to get into trouble when your tastes don't run to places populated by hordes of bogans.

This is not an excuse... we all have to make sacrifices. Mitch earns excellent money as a professional, and most likely needs to accept that for a while at least, he has to give up this element of his life. Otherwise, this will happen again and again.

I understand what you are saying John and I feel for Robbo, but I can't agree he shouldn't go about his daily life doing the things he enjoys (as long as he is drug free and not drunk).

Why should we let the .05% of the public who wish to harass him get their way. Robbo was not in a pub at 3am in King Street. He was out in the sunshine with is mates in the middle of the day enjoying some music. Surely no-one can begrudge him that lifestyle just because he kicks a pigskin around for a living.

I am not naive to his plight and the plight of others in the same situation but their lives shouldn't be ruled by some 'Hero @#$%wits' trying to make a name for themselves.

The media are to blame for this BS not Robbo. They sell more papers with the photo of Robbo in that pose than they do of the photo with Robbo and the guy in the wheel chair.

Fair enough CMan, can't argue with that.

Problem is, the problem is our culture of booze, bogans and violence... Plus a hungry and sensationalist media that feeds off the inevitable results of this culture.

If you want a guy like Robbo to stay out of trouble (either real or exaggerated) you have three options: modify our culture, reign in the media, or put guys like Robbo on an unfairly short leash.

There is really only one realistic option, unfortunately.

It may not be fair but life rarely is.

But believe me, I'd LOVE to have a crack at Option 1.

I haven't been to a BDO, but what is the crowd and atmosphere like? I'm surprised at the descriptions of "a bogan" event.

I had friends who used to go in the 90's and the impression I got was that they were very friendly, happy events that were attended by a broad section of the community. Lots of uni students, some older people and copious amounts of green and ecstasy.

Has it changed that much?

What would have we been saying should Robbo have been injured or worse?

It's like anything in life: One has to work to their limitations and with Robbo being the energetic outward type character he is, and the perception others have of him, he is more open to these type situations happening to him than may be the case with others.

Whether it be right or wrong makes for an entirely separate argument and I feel for Robbo, but when you start working out the odds, you get a pretty good idea where some things may lead.

All types considering the music varieties and I'm happy for my daughter to go, because I know if she smells something wrong she'll move away.

Robbo may not quite have that luxury and whether we like it or not the guy has a target on his head that someone like Cotchin does not carry.

I have a mate he is not famous but he is a big bloke now we are in our 40's and everytime we go out for drink some hero wants to have a go at him . In normal life he is a gentle giant but he is also partly deaf and cant wear his hearing aides in noisy places . Everytime we got out some bloke wants to go him . He knocks them to kingdom come . Been charged 4 times and got off due to witnesses. I would hate to think what it would be like for a footballer or any other person in the spotlight . Local legends would be going u all the time as they feel the need to make a name foe themselves.
The AFL should come out and say we give our players the right to protect themselves and if you want to have a go do so at your own perril because we will back the player to the hilt. Until that happens this stuff will continue because blokes will have a go just to get the player in trouble
