Some good points made by a few people here. For what it's worth, I see it as a case of Judd needed to step down and concentrate on footy. It's the best path forward for him to maintain his performance which means its the best path forward for the club.

Carrots is the stand out candidate for mine. He is is a vocal and demanding player which I think will compliment the Malthouse style of leadership at the Club - tough but positive. Simpson and Murphy seem to me that they would be more inclined to just go out and perform as best they can and lead the way with effort and courage on the park. I think Carrots can do that AND be the vocal captain that I think works best.

The less important (but worth mentioning) aspects include the fact that he is a Carlton man deep down as well, and also his very good media presentation. I think there may only be a very small handful of players who are better with the media than he, such as Duigan and (maybe) Judd.

Maybe I am biased though, because who here didn't dream about captaining the Blues and running the team out onto the MCG as a kid? :D

yeah, nah, can't say I ever had that dream shandog.

Carrots all the way for me.
I've read the age argument a few times, but i can't ever see how it matters really.
age is, as age does. I have no idea what that means.
but, I do believe that age arguments are limiting, and..well. ageist.

That works either way. If someone is clearly the best option for Captain, but relatively young, then that shouldn't stop them getting the pos. either.

Nothing to stop Murph getting the nod in 3 or 4 years times is there? although, i expect Gibbs will be superstar by then, and challenging for the title.
Or..Buckley maybe.

I reckon Carrazzo is much better with the media than Judd is.

Depends on whether indifferent Judd or happy-to-be-there Judd fronts up I think lol

No contest for me - Murphy.

Murphy is a competitor and hates losing, whereas Carrazzo does not seem like footy is the be all and end all. We need someone with mongrel.

..i think the only thing working against Carrots is his family life.. ..for Murphy, carlton can really be his main focus, and as players i think Murphy will grow and develop more from being Captain, Carrots is mostly at his 'ceiling'..

Carrots grew up a fanatical blueboy and has battled his way to the Blues best 22, leadership group and a B&F via the Geelong and Carlton rookie lists, pretty harsh call Drewgirl. Carrots is a very, very competitive beast and hates losing, go ask a guy like Nick Stevens.

What makes you think footy is not the "be all and end all" for him? Being a father of triplets and a partner in an electrical contracting business does not make him any less serious about his footy than Murph.

Two excellent candidates, we should be grateful.

So you don't think Carazzo's unreliable disposal is factor???

I dont think Carazzo makes the best decisions on the field. I also think Murphy is at the best age to take over the captaincy.

All players work hard to get in the AFL, so Carazzo coming through being a rookie, having triplets and having a business has nothing to do with it.

I am not saying Carazzo will not be good, but would rather go with the younger Murphy. I think Murphy will lift an extra Cog, whereas Carazzo is already at his peak.

Oh, so it's indifferent decision making and an age thing now? I thought it was a lack of mongrel.

Drilling goals in rubbish time and shouting "woohoo" in an opponents face does not a mongrel make.

When the opponent was Stanton, it induced a full mongrel....

Carrots and Stanton exchanged some interesting words that night, especially after Carrots kicked the sealer at the start of the last qtr.

Let's be pragmatic. Carazzo is the only player to really get in the face of an opponent in the past few seasons that I can recall, and not jut Stanton. He's articulate and has a great "back story" that would be an example to the while list.

Murphy is a small dude. He will be physically targeted even more than was the case last year. Can he cope? Not only cope but thrive? Not sure.

What is pragmatic? The club realises loyalty is a contract to contract proposition these days. Having the "c" next to ones name will help retain a player entering his playing and pay prime.

Didn't make a difference for Judd - left WC with a "c" next to his name.
Didn't make a difference for Jezza - left Carlton with TWO "c"s next to his name.

If Murphy wants to leave no c will keep him.
